George Aston Morris
« on: Wednesday 31 December 08 22:44 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any information about George Aston Morris born Ludlow Shropshire c 1811.

He lived in Wooler with wife Jane until she died in 1853. He then married Ellen. I can't find marriage for him and Ellen.  I think Ellen's maiden name may have been Chisholm.  I have searched freebmd to no avail. They were living in Gateshead when their daughter Ellen Morris was born in 1867.

I am trying to establish if Ellen Morris (1867) was my g grandmother and if I can find a marriage between George and an Ellen/Helen Chisholm I will know I am on the right track.   If anyone has this family in their tree I would be most grateful for anything they can tell me.

Hope I have posted this on the right board.

Thank you

Hi and a warm welcome to Rootschat :)

The family is in Gateshead in 1861: RG9/3804/27/16

Looking at the age gap between the children, the first of the enumerated Morris children in the 1861 census to have been born to Ellen rather than Jane is "Jane", 2 b Gateshead.  It seems to have been relatively common at the time for the first daughter of a second marriage to be named in honour of the deceased first wife.

This looks to be "Jane"'s baptism (extracted record from IGI at www.familysearch.org):

ELIZABETH JANE MORRIS OR ASTON

Birth:  19 APR 1859
Baptism:  23 APR 1860   Gateshead, Durham

Father: George MORRIS OR ASTON; mother Ellen

The same site also shows a possible son of the same couple, James b 1856 and baptised at Gateshead 1857, though he does not appear with the family in 1861.

Obviously the best way to identify for certain what Ellen's maiden name was would be to purchase the birth certificate of one of her children.  Her marriage to George (if there was a marriage) may or may not have been in her maiden name.  In 1861 she was enumerated as aged 30 - birthplace Wooler, Northumberland.

Anna :)

Hi Anna

Thank you for your help. I think I will have to order a certificate as you suggested as I have been trying to find out about Ellen for a long time now.

Thanks for your warm welcome too, it has put me at my ease as I am new on roots

No problem - you're very welcome :)

Young Ellen's birth registration details you probably already have (Jun 1867 Gateshead 10a 719).  She's "Hellen" in 1871, when the family is still in Gateshead.  Her mother Ellen is still born Wooler, but has mysteriously aged 15 years in a decade (I know the feeling!) - she's 45 in 1871: RG10/5054/92/49. Like you I can't easily find a suitable marriage.

The possibly encouraging news is that the 1851 census shows an Eleanor Chisholm born Wooler abt 1829, in service in Milbourn: HO107/2413/83/4.  But, confusingly, FreeBMD has a marriage of somebody by that name at Gateshead, Dec 1858, to James Brien or John Heinton/Heinston.

Definitely a case for a birth certificate - lots of potential for a wild-goose chase :)

PS.

Anna noticed that Ellen Morriss aged 15 years in the 10 years from 1861 to 1871 censuses.

Her printer stepson son John,  ages 21 years from 15 to 36,  in the same 10 years !

Thank you Anna and Michael

You have given me alot to think about!

My g grandmother Ellen Morris (1867) was married to Thomas Bennett (1867). Father of Thomas was John Bennett and he was meant to have wed the mother of Ellen (1867). This was the third time for him and I presume the 2nd time for her.  I found a Newcastle marriage for John Bennett and an Helen Moris. On the certificate it states George as Johns father (which is right) and a James Chisholm (shoemaker) for father of Helen. It says Helen was 47 and a widow.

I thought if I could find a marriage between George Morris and Ellen Chisholm I would definately be on the right track.  Unfortunately I can't seem to find a one. Plus as you have both stated there is a big difference between ages for Ellen/Helen it is all very confusing.

I can't order marriage cert for Thomas and Ellen which would give me Ellen's father as there doesn't seem to be one.

I was hoping someone might have had George and Ellen in their tree and would have been able to enlighten me.

Thank you both again for your help it is much appreciated.

Sparkle,

But I take the age differential to be an error on the part of whoever filled out the census form or by the census enumerator. I do not take it that these were two different women !

Your g/m ( Ellen Morris, born 1867) married Thomas Barrett ( b.1867)

Where when did they marry?
What name is recorded as Ellen's father on the marriage cert? And his occupation ?

Will tackle your other queries later.
