Thanks.  I guess I'll just have to file that line for future research.

:)  Having just got Edward's naval record, he did indeed come from Greenore. So it looks likely that Catherine was his sister.

That's fantastic as now you know where to start searching for church records, etc.

Ok, so now I've got a place name and a date of birth (from his naval record), where do I go to find birth records?  And does it matter that i don't know which denomination he was?

To order Irish certificates:
www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm

To find details of townlands and civil parishes in Ireland:
http://www.thecore.com/seanruad (be sure to change default setting from exact match to search for part of a name)

Once you have the name of the parish you can see if the church records exist. LDS online catalogue (www.familysearch.org) has some Irish church records- if you find one you want you can order the microfilm from your local LDS library for a small fee to be viewed there.

Meanwhile, do you want me to move this thread over to the Co. Louth board so people with more local knowledge can suggest sources?

Thanks again.

Yes, I should move it over to Louth.  Can the thread be moved or should I start a new one?

Thanks, Aghadowey, for moving it.

Hope someone can help me with this line.  I would also be interested in any relevant local history and photos.

To summarize:
I am looking for the family of Edward McAllister.  When he joined the Navy in 1896 he gave his date and place  of birth as  Cooley  18th December 1877.

He married Mary Scott.  Unfortunately I don't have a date for the marriage.  I have searched through Scottish and English indexes without finding it.  It is possible that they married in Ireland.

He left the Navy in 1902.  He was still described as a 'marine fireman' on later documents, so  I am guessing he was still a sailor.

He was living in Liverpool by 1917 when his son was born.  He may have been living there by 1910.

Sometime between 1920 and 1927 he moved to Edinburgh.

He died in Edinburgh in 1935.  His death cert gives his parents as Edward McAllister and Catherine Ryan.

There is a birth of a Catherine McAlister on the IGI in Greenore Parish, Carlingford, on 8 May 1880 to  Edward McAlister and Catherine Ryan.

I would like to find:
Marriage of Edward McAlister and Catherine Ryan.
Birth of Edward McAlister/McAllister junior
Any records relating to this family.

Any advice on where to find anything gratefully received.

Thanks in advance

Julie :)

This website you can order copies of certs from:
http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/quis.php?page=0&prevStartQuery=0

I've done a quick search and there is a church marriage record for Edward McAllister in 1876 in Louth and also a church marriage record for 1876 for Catherine Ryan in Louth so I would guess this would be the right one?  The date would fit with the birth of Catherine in 1880

You can buy the record from them for €5
