Help a complete beginner, Please!
« on: Wednesday 31 December 08 07:45 GMT (UK) »
I haven't done any Irish genealogy before.
I understand that the 1911 census for Ireland is complete, also that quite a lot of the 1901 survives.  I found the National Archives for Ireland site has part of the 1911 online, but where does one search the rest, and the 1901?
Also I need to search for a marriage, but have no idea which part of Ireland it took part in. (Hence needing to look at the census).
Any tips?
Thanks
Julie

Hi Julie,

Only Dublin, Antrim, Down and Kerry  1911 census are available to view on National Archives Ireland site. The other counties will be published  hopefully by mid-2009. You can see the list on the National Archives site in "Future Plans for Census" section.

1901 and 1911 Census microfilms can be ordered from LDS centres as far as I am aware.

Perhaps if you post the names you are searching for in Ireland, Rootschatters may be able to help you.

Thanks for the reply.  I have a feeling this is going to be like looking for a  needle  in a haystack! :-\

The family I am  researching are as follows (and it's not much):

James Joseph McAllister was born in Liverpool 1917. His parents were Edward McAllister (a Marine Fireman) and Mary Scott.

Mary Scott may have come from  Edinburgh

Edward McAllister was born in about 1879 in Ireland.  He died in Edinburgh in 1935. His parents were  Edward McAllister (an Engine Driver)  and Catherine Ryan.  I believe they lived in Ireland, but don't know whereabouts.

It's not much to go on, so any crumb of information is valuable.

Thanks to anyone who can help

All of 1901 and 1911 census records for Ireland survive (they are the 1st 2 complete ones).

IGI lists a child for an Edward McAlister and Catherine Ryan (can't be 100% these are you couple):
Catherine born 8 May 1880 Greenore Parish, Carlingford, Louth.
See www.familysearch.org for that record. IGI has many, not all, Irish births 1864-c1882.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Do you have Edward's death cert. 1935? Often there are details of the parents on Scottish certs.
Might tell you where and when theywere married.

:)  Oh Thankyou! that's a breakthrough, if it's the right family I now know where they come from.

Yes, I do have the death cert, that's where I got Edward senior and Catherine from, but that's all the info there was.

Thankyou both :)

Don't get your hopes up too much- both McAllister and Ryan are common Irish surnames and this might not be the same couple that you are looking for but at least it's a possibility.

I need to confirm it by finding them with their son, or confirming Edward seniors occupation of engine driver.   :o   Where does one access the 1901 and 1911 census?

1911 is gradually being added on National Archives, Dublin website. See here for order counties are being added (Louth is a while yet). After all 1911 is done they are putting on 1901.
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/about/futureplans.html

1901 and 1911 are also available on microfilm to order for viewing from your local LDS library but you need to know where they lived to order the correct film.
