Help with Dating
« on: Tuesday 30 December 08 13:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I need some help please with dating the frame and picture below and also if the picture is a painting or a shaded photo. The frame has a boarder and some flowers on it made of plaster and the glass is a bubble shape. I have been told the picture is off my gg grandfather 1851-1910 who lived in Folkestone, Kent England. Any information would be great.

Hi Bazzajim  :)

It's a bit hard to tell, but it looks like the photo is either on card under the glass, or actually painted on the glass.  My bet is the first option.  These enlarged photos on card were quite popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and were almost always touched up with either black ink or watercolours, as yours is.  The card was shaped from the back to make a convex shape that would sit under the curved glass.

It's a beautiful thing, especially to have in its original frame with the original glass - and I just love the dogs  :)
