Landrum - Ireland and Preston, Lancs - help in finding Irish link pls...
« on: Tuesday 30 December 08 12:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Probably a bit of a long shot, but wondering if anyone can help with my Landrum family?

Alexander Landrum born 1829, Ireland.

Married Elizabeth McCann 20 Aug 1855, Preston, Lancs. Dau Mary Elizabeth bapt 20 April 1857

Then married Mary Ann Landrum (born 1837 Ireland - assuming a cousin) 9 May 1859, Preston Lancs.
Alexander and Mary Ann had 9 children: Elizabeth, Sarah Jane, William, Alexander, Andrew, Mary Ellen, Martha Ann, Sarah Jane (Jenny), Isobel(lla)
Elizabeth Landrum (married William Gardner) is my gt gt grandmother

One of my great aunts (now dead) used to tell the story that Alexander came over from Ireland with his brothers Andrew and William after one of them was involved in a fight which left a man dead. She also said that the Landrums were protestants originally from Scotland not Ireland...but I have not been able to verify any of this.

There is no trace of Landrums in Preston prior to Alexander and Elizabeth, and I have not been able to firmly identify Alexander's brothers either.

And I have no idea where to start with the Ireland births - particularly as I have no idea even which county they came from.

There are lots of Landrums in the Liverpool area, but again I have not been able to make a link between them and Alexander

So I'm posting here to see if anyone has any hints on how to find out more - and in particular where should I start with the Ireland connection?

Any help much appreciated,
Thanks,
Suitcase

PS am posting this in Lancs and Ireland - feel free to suggest if I should post elsewhere as I'm new to this and not quite sure of the right etiquette  :)

Welcome to Rootschat.

Link to other thread:

First of all, civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages in Ireland began 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages). Therefore, to find a record of the births you would need to search for church records (if they exist) but to do so you need to know both the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just the county or 'Ireland').

Going by your family story, the most likely place in Ireland for the family to have lived is Ulster (most of which is now Northern Ireland) as many areas there were settled by Scottish families over a number of generations. The supposed Scottish connection may have been several more generations back so at the moment you shouldn't worry about that.

One of the best clues you have at the moment might be the surname as Landrum isn't, I think a common name in Ireland.

If you put 'landrum' and Ireland into the search page at www.familysearch.org there are entries which you can go through.

It might also be worth checking that you've tracced the family in every possible English census record to see if they ever put down a more exact birthplace than 'Ireland'.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for the quick reply.

I've scoured the census returns but no reference anywhere to anything other than Ireland. This is a thread of my family tree which I've left hanging for years because I just can't seem to get past this Ireland thing...

I'll try the IGI and perhaps if nothing else it will give me an idea where the Landrums might have been concentrated...maybe one day when I'm retired I'll have time to visit the parishes and go through the records there  :)

Thanks again (and thanks for posting the link to the other thread)

PearJim - I am quite sure that there is a connection, but I just can't quite put my finger on it....

When was your Andrew Landrum living at Gorst St? Is that information from his death certificate, or from census returns?
In 1891 census my Alexander Landrum and family were living at 6 Gorst St - this surely cannot be mere co-incidence....I checked no 10, but no Landrums there in 1891 at least

I had thought perhaps your Andrew born 1815 might be my Alexander's brother - a family member told me that he had two brothers: William and Andrew. However, Alexander was born in 1829 so that would be quite a big age gap between them...
Do you have Andrew and Jane's marriage certificate showing Andrew's father's name by any chance?

Isabella seems to be a recurring family name, so again, not just coincidence I think - just got to somehow work out the actual link

Do you know if any of your Landrums emigrated to the US at any stage? One of Alexander's daughters (not my direct line) emigrated with her husband, and her son told me of visiting cousin Beatrice in New Jersey - just wondering if there was any link there at all?

Pls keep me posted if you find out any additional information about your Landrums....and I will do likewise....there are so few Landrums in Preston (vs Liverpool and surrounding areas) that I am sure they are somehow connected....

Definitely sounds like there is a link here PearlJim - great if you can find out re Andrew's father - if it was Andrew then my hypothesis that Andrew and Alexander are brothers could be right...if not, I still think it must be the same family, just need to find the exact link

If you have any more info, copies of certificates etc, would be great to exchange - happy to pay to cover postage etc if need be

Do you publish your family tree anywhere? I use Ancestry....can share trees on there if that would help...

let me know best way to exchange info,
many thanks
