Meanings of Surnames? Looking for Pinniger
« on: Monday 29 December 08 21:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi all...

Can anyone direct me to a good English site, that would help me with finding out where the name Pinniger came from?

Doing my family tree, I have found that most of them seemed to have originated from Wiltshire, but I would like to know how to find out the meaning.  There are different spelling variations as well :(  Pinegar, Piniger, pinigar etc

Thanks,

Daisy Loo

Hi Daisy Loo

I would normally look at this site: http://www.britishsurnames.co.uk/
but although they list lots of variations for your name, they don't have a meaning for it

This one does though http://www.surnamedb.com/surname.aspx?name=Pinnigar

Thank you Barbara...I had that site, and found that meaning...I was hoping someone could come up with another to confirm it...I'm afraid to take just one source...  Thanks for the links! :)

Do you think this is a reliable source for meanings?

Not sure, have you looked at the surname interests tables - click on the tab at the bottom of the page, or click 'search rootschat' at the top of this page and put the name in the search box, I think there are a couple of other people researching the name

Hi Daisy Loo,

I don't have an answer about the meaning of Pinniger, but I am also looking for info about the Pinniger family.  My g-g-grandfather, James Pinniger, came to the US in July 1852.  Family history states that he came from Berkshire, England.  He was married to Sarah Martin who died in 1850.  He came to the US with his 3 children and remarried Ann Deacon in 1853, who was also from England.  Any connections to your Pinnigers?

I would greatly appreciate any correspondence....buckeye

Do you have a birth date for James Pinniger?

Added: My Direct line Pinniger's all came from Wiltshire, (by direct line, I mean, grandparents & siblings) but any of the siblings could have had a son called James.  It's not a common name as such, but a nightmare of a name to research, as there are quite a few variations :(
