My Grandparents worked for Langley Brasier Creagh at Streamhill - I have pictures!  I found my grandfather working there as early as 1901 (Census)  My Grandmother - Julia Ryan was also a cook

In my Burke tree I have two variants on the name Creagh and wonder whether they're just misspellings.

William Burke of The Neale, Co. Mayo, m. 6 Apr. 1858 Anne, eldest dau. of Stephen W. Creaghe; she was b. in Dublin some time between 1829 and 1832 (one of those many women who did not age by the expected 10 years between censuses).  Could her parents have been Stephen Creagh and Sally Persse, or am I jumping to conclusions?

William's sister Mabel Maria m. in 1853 Thomas Trouton, eldest son of Charles Robert Trouton and his wife Mary Anne née Creek.  Was that simply a mishearing or an anglicized pronunciation of Creagh, or is there really a family of Creek?

And now I'm wondering about the Persse connection, because Eleanor Elizabeth Aickin m. in Auckland, NZ, ca 1912, Robert Persse Creaghe.  So perhaps Creaghe really is the right spelling there.  Can anyone put me right?

Thanks for the info.  This is a great site. Actually got a great deal of info on corkpastand present about Streamhill House and the surrounding area.  Also I was wondering how you know your  grandparents worked in Streamhill House.  Was there  documentary evidence or just word of mouth.

I know my grandparents worked for the Braiser Creigh's at Streamhill because after Langley died, Ella May his wife, came to live in Mursley, Buckinghamshire.  She brought my grandparents, their three daughters, and Martin O'Grady with her. All three daughters then worked for Ella May as did Martin O'Grady.  Martin married one of the daughters - these were my parents.  Sadly my mother passed away recently, she would have been 100 later this year. She was still living in Mursley!

I know this tells us nothing about any servants or employees, but the family of Brasier-Creagh is in Burke's Irish Family Records.

William Harrington Sherlock Langley-Brasier-Creagh, of Stream Hill;
b. 14 Apr. 1857; d. 15 July 1921.  m. (1st) 14 Apr. 1887 Jane, only child of Henry Langley of Byblox, Doneraile [which is presumably when he added the name Langley].  She d. 4 May 1889 [it doesn't say so, but I imagine in childbed of a stillborn child or one that didn't survive].  He m. (2nd) 27 Feb. 1902 (Ella) May, 4th dau. of Edward Maynard Denny of 1 Bryanston Square, London W1.  She d. 29 Jan. 1958.  No children (or no surviving children) by either marriage.

It doesn't say what became of Stream Hill.  May's youngest sister m. one of William's younger brothers, Kilner Brazier-Creagh -- yes, the various members of the family couldn't agree whether to spell it with an S or a Z.

The present head of the family is descended from a cousin, son of William's father's eldest brother.  I wonder whether you'd be able to google up a present-day member of the family, in Co. Cork or England or elsewhere, who would know something?  The book was published in 1976, so I doubt many of the postal addresses given would apply now.

I go to Doneraile a lot and have been in Streamhill House.  Badly vandalised now but was luvly house when I was a chilld in the 50's and 60's.  A lot of my relations worked there when it was owned by the Dills.  My mother worked in Creagh Castle in her  youth and apparently it was haunted.  A huntsman was drowned there.  These Creaghs were related to the Langley Creaghs of Streamhill.  Lily Langtry stayed there in her day.

Thanks for all the info I have been given on this site.  I have discovered by looking at the site www.corkpastandpresent.ie that in fact my greatgrangmother would in fact have worked for Charles William Murphy the gent who owned Streamhill House before Langley-Creagh circa 1890.  Unfortunately there is no census to troll for that era so thats knocked on the head.
