Hi

Glad to hear it's nothing too serious and hope it mends soon.

but the only slender one in this case is the first-born's middle name of JONES which warrants investigation

One of my great grandfathers daughters was given the middle name of Bullock and another daughter McCormick.  Neither name has any connection whatsoever to family members - they were just friends surnames.

The only sure way of finding her maiden name and ensuring you have the right marriage is as I said above

Quote
If her surname was Quarmby - this is the marriage but your friend needs to buy a copy of one of the childrens birth certs first to confirm her maiden name

Marriages March qtr 1865
Beaumont  John     Huddersfield  9a 367
Quarmby  Sarah Ann     Huddersfield  9a 367

Births March qtr 1871

Beaumont  Arthur     Huddersfield  9a 348

Hi All

There are other records as NOT all Birth certs give Mothers maiden name. My gran born 1874 Chesterfield Did not have her mums name but found it by where here father was lodging as it was the Land ladies Daughter.

One tip a renowned Yorkshire Genealogist  told me once was to find all the marriage spouse Maiden surnames of said dates. Check the census for these names in the said family as visitors also Neigbhbour's and Streets around as unusual or uncommon to the area. Also he never puts the name he thinks is the person but eliminates others. The told me.

D

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

There's a large blank area in the chart surrounding Sarah Ann (I'm working on an unusual concept for charts) (example here) so I agree CaroleW, for once I should afford the luxury of birth cert. but I thought it would mean buying the few likely marriage certs. and then there are apparently a few marriages of John Beaumonts without a spouse listed. My miserable budget may stretch to a cert so I'm trying to narrow it down somehow.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated.
It was also not uncommon for a child to be (middle) named after a Godparent, although I can't say I've come across it.

Sarah Ann Jones!- Known birth in Huddersfield 1848, I am trying to find her on 61 c the time nearest the wedding year and would have been 13 then also most likely in service as a servant. Thus may not be on the 61c another possibility is that this Sarah Ann died before 1861 as child death! though have found on buriel.

She's there at Ancestry:
Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 3270; Folio: 66; Page: 6; GSU roll: 543106

Name:     Sarah Ann Jones
Age:    13
Estimated Birth Year:    abt 1848
Relation:    Daughter
Father's Name:    Samuel
Mother's Name:    Sarah
Gender:    Female
Where born:    Milnsbridge, Yorkshire, England
Civil Parish:    Linthwaite
Ecclesiastical parish:    Milnsbridge St Luke
County/Island:    Yorkshire
Country:    England
Registration district:    Huddersfield
Sub registration district:    Lockwood
ED, institution, or vessel:    13
Household schedule number:    27
Household Members:

Name    Age

Samuel Jones    46
Sarah Jones    43
Mary Jane Jones    17
Frances Jones    10
Frederick William Jones    8
Eve Emma Jones    3
Adam Jones    3
Sarah Ann Jones    13

Lucky she's 2 years too young or I'd be tempted to look no further.
She's 1848 in both '51 & '61 whereas I think John's Sarah is 1846 in '71, '81 & '91

Lockwood is a seperate parish to Linthwaite / Milnsbridge is it not?

if Almondbury main parish lockwood is in Almondbury and Linthwaite, St Peters covers  north Huddersfield,
Lockwood covers lover colne valley but this is census open to error as info from illiterates. Not Recorded Doc's

Rashcliffe upper could be lower Milnsbridge
Stroney Battery lane, Paddock fields Rashcliffe parish

Milnsbridge-lower--valley-----------------\
River Colne
--------Paddock fields Rashcliffe          >---------             Huddersfield
River Holm
Lockwood-lower-----valley----------------/

Hi

Quote
and then there are apparently a few marriages of John Beaumonts without a spouse listed.

This is only a problem when the maiden name is unknown.  If known - it is easy to cross ref on the GRO index - see fictitious example below

Freebmd entry shows 2 male entries and only one female on the same page

John Smith
James Brown
Margaret Jones
The ref is March qtr 1850 Huddersfield 51  333

You have the name Sarah Ann Davies from the birth cert so you look at the entries in the March qtr 1850 for Sarah Ann Davies and a ref Huddersfield 51  333
