You could well have the ketuba (the Jewish marriage contract). Can you scan it and post it here?

However, the ketuba will only tell the bride's and groom's full Hebrew names. It was actually written in Aramaic, but there are standard translations on the web.

The marriage authorisation is mostly in English and is of more use - genealogically speaking.

We need to establish Josef's placed of birth.

Bride: Chana bat (daughter of) Shemuel Ya'acov ha-Levi (the Levite)

In your post of 10 November you stated that your father had said that Josef was born in a place called Photz. I thought the birth in Whitechapel had been ruled out.

I need to do some research regarding joseph birth, but im sure it was england, i think it was solomon who wasnt born here. but had joseph in england.

You'll need to learn a smattering of Hebrew, as I had to. The words in italics below are Hebrew.

ben = son of
bat = daughter of
ha'mechune = also known as
ha-Levi = the Levite

That makes:

Yosef son of Shlomoh also known as Zalman

Cheers , i have no other way of gaining information.

So i should gain the marriage authorisation of joseph and anne?  £20? i would pay that...would it provide me with info of josephs parents etc..?

I gather that your Joseph was either 27 or 29 when he married in 1917, i.e. born  in about 1890. Therefore, he cannot be the above Joseph.

Can you post the civil marriage cert to the same website as you did for the ketuba?

Hello,

While your scanning can you have a look at the bottom of the ketuba. Have you missed three lines of hand-written Hebrew - signatures in fact. Joeseph may not have been able to write in English, but I would guess that Hebrew/Yiddish would not have been a problem for him.
