Witton Park - location of records please?
« on: Friday 26 December 08 19:30 GMT (UK) »
Could someone point me in the right direction please...

I'm researching the death of a family member in Witton Park, who was recorded as having died in 1873.

The 1871 Census lists Witton Park as being in the Parish of St. Pauls so I presume that the church of St. Pauls had already been built. Having driven past the church recently, it didn't appear to have a church yard.

1. Where will I find the burial records for Witton Park for that period?

2. Where would residents of Witton Park be be buried in 1873? Would it be Escomb Cemetery and if so, are there any burial records for the cemetery?

Thanks in advance!

Mark.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

According to the Durham County Records Office website, there are no Burial Records deposited with them for Witton Park...

What about the burial question, would residents of Witton Park be buried in Escomb Cemetery?

Regards, Mark.

Hi Mark,

I looking for the same as you .......

I have a memorial card of a relative who died in 1898 .... it reads...

...... beloved wife of Woodside (which is Witton Park) ..... interred at Escomb Cemetery ....

I have visited the only cemetery there .... most of it is now gone ... there's a few headstones left in the long overgrown grass and a few propped up in long nettles around the outside wall ... but I couldn't find what I was looking for.

About a year ago I did email the council to try to find out which church they would have used .....to contact them for records but they didn't reply.....

I'd  forgotten all about it until I saw your post.

If you have any luck .... please let me know.

Hi Jean,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I had a trip along to Escomb cemetery today and it's in quite a sorry state...There isn't even a sign indicating that it was indeed Escomb cemetery!
I came across a few stones, which mentioned individuals from Witton Park, so I'm guessing this was where they were all interred, but as I can't locate the burial registers, I'm a bit stuck. I don't expect to find a grave stone, but I was at least hoping to confirm his burial location.
As I say, the records office don't appear to hold the Burial registers and St. Pauls doesn't appear to have a churchyard so it must be Escomb Cemetery?!?!
I'll have a go at the council and ask them for the information. At the same time, I'' double-check with the records office. If I find anything, I'll let you know...
Regards,

Mark.

St Paul's Witton Park was an ecclesiastical parish/district formed from Escomb St. John
in 1869,  and the church was apparently not authorised for burials.

Not all churches or chapels were authorised to hold burials, or even other ceremonies.
The division of Parishes into Districts and Chapelries.
The Church Building Act 59, Geo. 3, cap. 134, sec.16,  states;
"Provided always, that it shall be lawful for the Commissioners, with the consent of the Bishop of the Diocese, to determine.................... whether banns of marriage shall be published and marriages or baptisms, churchings or burials shall be solemnised or performed in any such chapel or not;"
