Hi folks

I am trying to find my wifes 4x grandfather, John Howat, parents, he has no birth or death certificate that I can find although there are many namesakes listed.

His son Samuel Howat's death certificate gives clues about him being in Ayrshire in 1881 and that his wife, Jean Edgar (Jeannie)? is deceased also.

He was married in Durrisdeer but the certificate gives no information other than his and his spouses name, his children were born in Durrisdeer from 1826-1836 apart from one born in Morton.

Not sure what to do next, I can upload an image from scotlandspeople.gov.uk, if that is OK?

Thanks,

Wul

This is a longshot.

There is a John Howat - Ag. Lab., wife Jane (Jean) and four children, Samuel 11, Thomas, 4 Jean 6, and Marrion l, living in Kirkcaldy, Durrisdeer, Dumfries on the 1841 census.

On IGI is listed a Henry Howatt and Janet Gilchrist, married on Nov. 13, 1802 in Bonhiel, Dunbarton.  They have children listed as follows:

James 1803
John Feb. 5, 1805 ***born Bonhiel, Dunbarton
Janet 1807
Portfield 1808
William 1810
Henry 1815
Marrion 1818****

The only reason I thought perhaps this might be the family you are seeking is because your John Howat named one of his children, Marrion.  Perhaps this is just coincidence, but perhaps worth looking into.

Thanks Torrygirl, I think the Howat name has several variations so there may something in that assumption.

Yes audrey, that is the correct Samuel, he died in 1881 a sheperd, his father and son are mentioned on the death certificate while his mother is shown as deceased.

The father and son are living in Dalrymple, Ayrshire according to the death certificate.

Can I post the relevant section without breaking copyright laws?

Found him!

He was born in Crossmichael, 23/10/1804 and died in Dunscore 25/02/1890

His father Samuel Howat and mother Margaret Thomson are my next objective!

Thanks all...
