Searching for Cowie's
« on: Wednesday 24 December 08 05:33 GMT (UK) »
   Hi,
I'm looking for information on my G Grandmother. Her name = Ann { Annie } Cowie { maiden name}. She was born in Peterhead 27 July 1874 { death 14 Dec 1953 } to Alexander Cowie and Jane Morrison.
It is also mentioned that she came from Banff / MacDuff or Buckie.
I have nil other information on her family apart from the above mentioned. Thank you to all at RootsChat.
                                         Heather

Please disregard my question. I've duplicated this question without thinking. Sorry if I've offended anyone. I wasn't thinking.

Hello

I am the great great grandaughter of alexander cowie and jane cowie nee morrison,  they had a son called John Cowie who was born 1863 he married a jessie mckay from Brora.  their wedding certificate has the cowie's living at Richmond Place Port Gordon Enzie.

The cowie's left PortGordon and then moved to Macduff.  My Grandfather was Francis James Cowie and my name is Mary Cowie, living in Shetland.

Do you think we are related. :)

Hello Mary,
Yes, I think we are related. My Great Grandmother was Annie or Ann Cowie, sister to John. Alexander and Jane had nine children as far as I know. John was the second child and Ann was the seventh.
If you need any further information just let me know. I have kindly been given details about our family tree by cousins of my Father.
How are the Shetlands? They are on our list of places to visit.

Hello Mary, I am Heather's cousin Ann. I was delighted to see your posting. Another cousin and I have been trying for ages to find someone else descended from Alexander and Jane. We have a lot of family details from Jane's birth onwards including who each of the family members married but we are unsure if we have the correct parents for Jane Morrison . We have a birth record for 1838 at St.Ninians Tynet for Jane daughter of James Morrison and Isabel Smith of Nether Dallachy, which is the birthplace given on Jane's wedding record, but we aren't sure when James and Isabel were born as there were several options. If you can shed any light on that we would be really grateful. As Heather said we are very happy to share any information you need.
all the best
Ann

Hi Mary I am  a great granddaughter of Alexander Cowie and Jane Morrison.  I live in Fraserburgh.  Where about in Shetland do you stay.  As Ann said we have come to a halt with the parents of Jane Morrison and also with the grandparents of Alexander Cowie.  We know his Father was William and his Mother was Janet Farquhar.  They were married at Enzie on 2 - 11 -1837.  Pretty  certain William was born 15-2-1811 and Father Alexander Mother Anne Smith (There are 2 lots not sure which)  Janet Farquhar born 20-2-1814 died 16-3-1867 Father James Farquhar Mother Ann Reid.  Would love to compare notes.

Hi Mary,
I have the record of John's marriage  to Jessie and also the marriages of five of Alexander and Jane's other children.  James born 1869 is the only one I don't have any further records of other than the birth.
The other records I have are William born 21 Dec 1859 Portgordon married Isabella Reid 14 Sep 1882.   Isabella born 13 Oct 1864 Portgordon  married William Webster 6 Oct 1893. She died at 61 Crovie 19 Nov 1946.  Alexander born 20 June 1867 Portgordon married Jane Hunter 2 Oct 1891.  James born 30 Sep 1869 Portgordon but no more known.  Jessie Jane born 27 Jan 1872 Portgordon  married John Reid 17 Dec 1897 and died 13 Oct 1916 at 71 Main St.Buckie.  Ann who was my Great Grandmother was born 27 July 1874 at Peterhead(also registered Enzie). She married David Jack on 21 Oct 1898 at 1 George Street Macduff and lived in Avoch all her married life. She died on 14th Dec 1953 at 5 Factory Lane Avoch.
I have just last week found all the birth records of Jane Morrisons 7 siblings all born at Nether Dallachy like her and all baptised at St.Ninian's Tynet. I have found marriage records for four of them and  have death records for three. If you need these let me know and I'll post the details. I have a death record for James Morrison Jane's father in 1897 Nether Dallachy but not for Isabella her mother who died some time before Jane married Alexander.
I hope these details are useful to you.
I live in Australia by the way.
all the best
Ann

Hello There

It is good to hear from the cowie side as I know no one from my fathers family.

This has been a year of study so not really focused on family history.  I have come unstuck at the same place as you.  I live in Scalloway on the west of Shetland.  We did see a lady called Jess Bruce when I was small and my dad who is now 79 was in touch with Patsy Bruce.
I know my grandfather had brothers, Albert and David. Donald fell from a ship and died when he was 18.
I think Patsy had a daughter called Pat.

It would be good to have some more information.
Look forward to hear from you and sorry for the late reply :)
Mary

Hi Mary,
Sorry I can't help with any information but hopefully philorth or peacekeeper might be able to help. Glad to hear from you again.
