Can be ordered online at

www.gro.gov.uk

cost is £7 - if you have the reference - which you have (5b 114)

when you get to the bit that says have you got the ref, click on yes, or whatever - then only complete the bits with red stars.

Remember in your research that "Newton Abbot" in the birth indexes (as it says for Herbert and Susan and MArgaretta) is a registration district, that covers quite an area (Denbury village is in the Newt Abb reg district).

Any thing else we can help with - just ask - Rootschat is a great place.

Many thanks for the advice. I've ordered a certificate so i'll see what comes back - fingers crossed. Based on the info you found it makes some sense, but who can tell.

Sorry to be cheeky, but was wondering you can find anything out about my other line 'Cleave'. I'm stuck with John Cleave 1805. Not sure how I go back from here as most web based things stop here. Any advice for a complete amature?

Simon

Once yuo get back pre1837 you are more reliant on Parish registers.
These are not often on line, though you may find some entries on the IGI (searchable free at familysearch.org, "extracted" entries, although best checked out, are worth looking at, "submitted" entries are sometimes no more than someones imagination!) Different area have better coverage than others on the IGI

Local Record Offices will hold Parish registers, I dont know where you live, but it always fun to go and search through them yourself if yuo can - for christeneings, burilas and marriages.
Otherwise, you may find a local rootschatter who has access to them.

Do you know if Henry and Ann married after 1837? (d-o-b for the children might give an indication)?
If so, a marriage cert will give father's name and occupation and therefore be a first step to going back.
Have you got them on any censsues?
