CHAPPLE/CLEAVE Totnes area
« on: Monday 22 December 08 12:58 GMT (UK) »
My first message on Roots.com!

Any help relating to the Chapple's and Cleaves would be most welcome as  have gone cold.

Chapple. - Living in Totnes

Herbert Philip Chapple (b) 1892 Newton Abbot. He had several sisters and brothers Margaretta Jane (b. est 1883), Susan Ethel (b. est 1887) and possibly Jack, however there could be more. I believe their parents were William Chapple and Frances, however I cannot be sure. All children were born in the Newton Abbot area. Any information that might help would be useful.

Cleave. – Living in Totnes

John Cleave (b. est 1805) Ivybridge, married Mary and had 3 children Elizabeth, James and Thomas. He later re-married Ann (b. 1810) from Brixham and had Robert. William Charles and George.

I trying to find out more about John and his ancestry and possibly Mary and Ann’s Maiden names. Again any information would be welcome.

Regards
Simon

Many thanks for the quick response.

I'm pretty sure about the birth place of Herbert Philip, Magaretta Jane and Susan Ethel. (all Newton Abbot). As to their parents I know nothing. Herbert does have a Military medal from WW1 as I have it here. Out of curiosity I typed his name in to google and it came up on Devon Heritage website, listing Gazetted date and parents name, however I it lists him born in Torquay in Oct Nov Dec which isn't quite right, so I'm really not sure they were William or Frances. If not I don’t have anything to go on. It’s a strong coincidence. He got the MM in 1915 France, but this lists 1917 – so thinking about it this can’t be him. Just another brave sole!!!

Once again thanks for the help.
Simon

There are several Herbert Chapple births in Devon within a year or two of 1892, but nono others with middle name Philip, or in Newton Abbot reg district.
So if you are sure on those facts, it would be worth getting the cert to find his parents.

Looks like there is another person around born Torquay with parents Francis and William - does whatever you read say for sure he had middle name Philip? and was born 1892? Or was he just another Herbert Chapple from Devon who won a medal.

...and of course the important question is - which is yours?
