Mary Pearce's home, Kildare or Tipperary ?
« on: Sunday 21 December 08 18:29 GMT (UK) »
On the 26th September 1856 my great grand mother, Mary Pearce, married Sgt Thomas Litchfield  of the 51st Regiment, stationed at the Curragh, at Ballysax Parish Church.
Mary's place of residence as well as that of her father - Thomas John- is recorded as the Parish of Ballysax.  One of the witnesses was Mary McDonnel/McDonnal.
Following the marriage the regiment moved to India, via UK where Mary gave birth to a daughter in 1858, and accompanied the regiment to India.
Sgt Litchfield died whilst in India.  Mary then married my Great Grand Father in Lahore, a Sgt in the same regiment.
When the family finally returned to the UK, all the UK national census returns records Mary's place of birth as Tipperary until her passing in 1902.

I am trying to obtain any information relating to Mary's home and family but which direction do I follow ?
Any help would be most appreciated.

According to the Irish Family History Foundation site the only Mary Pierce born in Tipperary was in 1842.

There was one born in Wicklow in 1837, father's name Thomas. Might be the one you want.

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so for earlier dates you are dependant on finding church records (if they exist). The absence of any other  baptismal records does not mean that the one which you do find is the correct one.

That's alright- have amended your post to show her father as John.

Presumely Co Kildare as it was custom and practice for a bride to Marry in ones own home parish.
For what its worth there are Pearses living in Naas Co Kildare.
Mary Pearse (married name & aged 80++years died recently)   Not sure if any sons to carry on family name but  all daughters are mrried. Perhaps try telephone book.

Marriages usually, but not always, took place in bride's church. Perhaps Mary's family moved when she was young or perhaps she moved away to a different area to find employment.

On the 31st June 1856 the 51st Regiment disembarked at Cork.
Whilst quartered at Nenagh a muntiny broke out at Tipperary, the Regiment was ordered to Tipperary to keep the peace.  After a few days the Regiment was sent to Dublin and arrived on the 22nd July.  On the 17th August the Regiment marched to the Curragh and remained there until 9th October when it received orders to proceed to Cork to embark for India.

Mary married Thomas on the 26th September 1856.

Is it possible Mary met Thomas whilst the Regiment was in Tipperary and followed the Regiment  ?
