Hepplewhite births Gateshead 1856
« on: Friday 19 December 08 01:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello. Happy Christmas to you! :)

Can anyone find the parents' names (first names are fine)of the 2 Hepplewhite children registered in the December Quarter 1856 in Gateshead?  The children are Thomas and Margaret Eleanor. I'm hoping for parents named Thomas and Martha and I've tried IGI and the Bishop's transcripts on line but the latter don't go as far ar 1856.

I feel it's not possible without my buying the certificates but nothing ventured.......

Thank you for your help

Pat V

Hi Pat,

They are elusive, the births have the same ref no. in March (not Dec) Qu 1856 so I assume they are twins, but I can't see them in the 1861 or 1871 census, nor a couple called Thomas & Martha.

Maybe they emigrated?

Can I ask where you got the names Thomas & Martha?

Dear Wozzle and Barbara,

Thank you for your help.

You are quite right, the family did emigrate. The parents were Thomas and Martha. They had a son John die in NSW in 1861. Later 8 more chn were born in NSW.

William and Richard were born in Wingate in 53 and 54. They were baptised in B Auckland in 55. Some of Thomas' family had moved there.

I'm searching for the births of a Thomas born ~1857, Mary born ~ 1859 and James who died in NSW in 67 but doesn't seem to have been born there. (There was probably a 56 baby also , given the pattern.) Anyway, I just wondered if they'd moved to Gateshead on their way to Oz. The Margaret Eleanor was a newie but Thomas' next sister was an Eleanor and he and Martha did produce a Margaret later on.

I'm just amazed they managed to emigrate. How did they do it? Where did they get the money? Don't know enough about it yet. I wondered if they were brought by mine owners. Thomas was a miner in Durham and continued a miner in Newcastle NSW for the next 43 years.

Anyway, thank you both again. Hope you don't think I deceived you. I never thought you'd look at the census but it would be the logical step given that I hadn't mentioned emmigration.

Cheers
Pat
This 61 family is definitely the same clan ............ Benwell and lots of familiar names. Thank you for that.
Pat :)

Not at all, and looking at the census is the thing most of us on Rootschat would do to try to find these children.  I'm afraid you will probably need to get the birth certs to sort this one out

Kind regards,
Barbara

Dear Barbara,
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, I will need to bite the bullet and send for a couple of certificates.
Compliments of the season to you. :)
