Dear Wozzle and Barbara,
Thank you for your help.
You are quite right, the family did emigrate. The parents were Thomas and Martha. They had a son John die in NSW in 1861. Later 8 more chn were born in NSW.
William and Richard were born in Wingate in 53 and 54. They were baptised in B Auckland in 55. Some of Thomas' family had moved there.
I'm searching for the births of a Thomas born ~1857, Mary born ~ 1859 and James who died in NSW in 67 but doesn't seem to have been born there. (There was probably a 56 baby also , given the pattern.) Anyway, I just wondered if they'd moved to Gateshead on their way to Oz. The Margaret Eleanor was a newie but Thomas' next sister was an Eleanor and he and Martha did produce a Margaret later on.
I'm just amazed they managed to emigrate. How did they do it? Where did they get the money? Don't know enough about it yet. I wondered if they were brought by mine owners. Thomas was a miner in Durham and continued a miner in Newcastle NSW for the next 43 years.
Anyway, thank you both again. Hope you don't think I deceived you. I never thought you'd look at the census but it would be the logical step given that I hadn't mentioned emmigration.
Cheers
Pat
This 61 family is definitely the same clan ............ Benwell and lots of familiar names. Thank you for that.
