Hi Andrew

I don't think it will unless she's with her husband. The question asked is 'How many children of this marriage - alive/dead'. See Tati's message very early on.

I thought married women had to answer this question whether hubby was enumerated with them or not. "State, for each Married Woman enumerated on this Schedule, the number of... Children born alive to present Marriage [etc.]"

So far as I know the institution schedules asked the same questions.

I have found my GGG Grandmother on the census and she is listed as in an Institution (preumably workhouse), rather than a Household.
...
Andrew

I wonder how many people were in the institution. You may have to pay for a lot of pages. In earlier censuses institutions were listed in alphabetical order.

Not so - I've got two who are not with husbands (staying with relatives) and no fertility info given. it's 'of the present marriage' and has been interpreted differently.

Hi

I have found a few ancestors who say that some of their children died. New leads to trace.

By 1911 an Essex couple had been married for 45 years according to the census which tallies with their 1866 marriage.

I think you're right, Gadget - largely down to interpetation;  I've found two widowed great aunts, both of whom have entered their children, alive and died.

What a pity!  Fortunately my g-grandmother, whose husband was away at sea as a naval officer, filled it all in (it was still her "present marriage" after all...).

For that matter one of my 3x g-grandmothers, long-widowed, ignored the instructions and filled the fertility info in, helpfully specified that all her nine children had been sons, and inserted her own date of birth in addition to her birthplace for good measure.  Thanks, Harriet ;)
