I'm not against pay per view (can't really with Scottish interests!) but 30 credits seems exhorbitant to me.

The same org that had the 1911 contract runs the Scotlands People site and there is a charge of 1 credit for an index search and 5 for a view/download of the full image.  1 unit/credit = 20p...........

The problem of course is that the population of Scotland in 1911 was rather less than the population of England, so the digitisation project was therefore quite a bit cheaper.  Brightsolid (the people involved in the 1911 digitisation project) are a commercial company, and they will be wanting to make a profit from doing it.

I don't think Scotland 1911 is coming out for a while. Brightsolid were lured south  :)

Just a thought ~ no one can blame the enumerators for bad handwriting on these images

Naughty ancestors!

Sorry, I don't have any ancestors north of Yorkshire, so my experience of searching Scottish registers is zero  :)

I was amazed at just how good my grandfather's writing was, because he was a Bricklayer, and I don't think he was very well educated.  I wonder how long it will be before extracts of 1911 census images become commonplace on here ?  :)

It's working fine for me right now, Jan. I did get a page saying it wasn't, but I clicked back and tried again and it was fine. Try again and see what happens.

Still very firmly stuck on the home page :'( Perhaps they've decided I've found more than fair share ;D

It might be worth e-mailing the support address in the original e-mail they sent out, as they'd probably want to know about problems like that...that's what they're trying to iron out, after all! Good luck!

We might not be able to blame the enumerators for bad hand-writing, but:

Whoever wrote out the form used the surname Parrin, the person who signed the form (not the same writing) signed as Perrin, and it has been transcribed as Perrin!!

When I cross-checked in the BMDs, the family is Parrin!!  But then when the daughter married in 1932ish she was Perrin!!  Hey ho!  ::) ::)

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

for searching purposes it is expensive, best to use the 10 unit option, until your sure you have the correct
family, so far i have d/l 7 original 1911 census, and just one was wrong, so for me was worth every penny, both my great grand parents died shortly after the 1911 census and my Nan and her siblings ended up in care, and until i saw this i had no idea where they were living at the time, so this has been a superb help in tying up a few loose ends.

For others who search and pay and find nothing then obviously it will be a feeling of disappointment and think its a waste of money, as said for general searching purposes the cost is expensive, so best left until a subscription is available, i have been lucky that when ive searched with the info' i knew it was obvious i had the right ones,

Lets not forget prior to this beta, to get a page of the 1911 census would have cost you £45, maybe a good idea for the official release is for people to start now and collect credits,

re the handwriting i reckon a LOT are going to be better presented than previous census, as they will have had the forms in the comfort of their homes to fill in and been able to take time, whereas the previous were done on the doorstep, ive certainly found the ones ive d/l so far are excellent to read
