I abhor pay-per-view myself, but I can understand why it was done. Nearly a mile of file shelving had to be photographed, digitised and transcribed, and this no doubt took a lot of labour. People who object to paying around £2.70 to £3.00 to see the original copy of the return can always wait until the full release of the census in 2011, when it should be available on subscription.
