The charges really are staggering for seeing images. And if you have someone difficult to find - I have looked sometimes at over twenty images (and still not found them)

I see some new counties available Beds, Berks, Gloucs.

Some of my Egham ancestors have appeared in Berks, though they lived in Surrey

I abhor pay-per-view myself, but I can understand why it was done.  Nearly a mile of file shelving had to be photographed, digitised and transcribed, and this no doubt took a lot of labour.  We must bear in mind that we are being given the opportunity to see this data 2 years early, and the company who did the preparation work (Brightsolid) want to see a return on their investment.  People who object to paying around £2.70 to £3.00 to see the original copy of the return can always wait until the full release of the census in 2011, when it should be available on subscription.

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

I'm not against pay per view (can't really with Scottish interests!) but 30 credits seems exhorbitant to me.

The same org that had the 1911 contract runs the Scotlands People site and there is a charge of 1 credit for an index search and 5 for a view/download of the full image.  1 unit/credit = 20p. They are also kept by default in your search history.

This means that most Scottish certs cost £1.20 compared with £7 for E & W ones and census pages cost the same - £1.20.

Again, Scottish wills cost £5 compared with £3.50 of PCC wills.

Isn't it time things were standardised  :(

I agree, it should be standardised.

As this is currently proving so expensive I have decided to leave the really difficult ones to find until its cheaper and only use these trial to find those I am certain of.  Otherwise I could spend loads of money I don't have  ::)

Hi

Sadly I think things are already standardized.  I have just been looking at WW1 war diaries which the National Archive has put on line and the cost to view an image is £3.50.  It is not clear from the free index what information is in the image - you just get the name of a regiment, date and theatre - and the site warns that the diaries extend over several images.  So to follow a unit through a major battle will cost you several £3.50s including a few exploratory stabs to find the right unit first.

All the best

Hi

I believe the Wills at the National Archives are only up to 1858, after that date you have to purchase them from York at a cost of 5 pounds. I seem to recall that the cost is legislated which is the reason they also cost 5 pounds (and you can't use credits) from Scotlandspeople.

As far as certificates are concerned, Scotland has different legislation and can supply scans of the actual registers whereas England & Wales has to be certified and I think the 7 pound cost is also in the legislation. (one of the chatters more knowledgable on the law may be able to confirm this)

As far as the 1911 census is concerned, its still cheaper than the 1901 census was when first released.

The problem of course is that the population of Scotland in 1911 was rather less than the population of England, so the digitisation project was therefore quite a bit cheaper.  Brightsolid (the people involved in the 1911 digitisation project) are a commercial company, and they will be wanting to make a profit from doing it.

Have had a great time. Very lucky with counties available. Have found my great grand parents and grand parents, except my grandma who was probably working away and my great grandfather who was probably in Three Counties Asylum and therefore not included.

Pricey yes a bit perhaps but it was a huge project.

Sadly today it seems to have stopped working - is that just me?

Jan ;)

It's working fine for me right now, Jan. I did get a page saying it wasn't, but I clicked back and tried again and it was fine. Try again and see what happens.
