For those of us great unwashed who haven't received a personal invite,  :'( are the searches free? If so I can think of some simple lookups that would be of great help.

Sadly not! It's 10 credits to see a transcript and 30 credits to see a facsimilie of the original (handwritten by your ancestors) page. 60 credits costs £6.95,  280 credits costs £24.95 and more credits than that for some other price that I don't remember!

No the search is free. You have to pay to view the transcripts and the images.

I've just done lots of free searches and haven't used any of my spare left over credits.

I think it's excellent, as a trial site, roll on the real thing.

Is it just me, though?  At the side of the surname box is a ? button, and it advises using a wildcard or variant search, but I can't see one anywhere.

Entering Joh* and Smi* would turn up no results at all, but just putting surname SMITH would turn up lots (just an example, not looking for a John Smith thank goodness).

I have emailed them - perhaps the variants search will be in the full version

Hi Barbara

I've just putting in a * instead of one of the letters in a successful search that I'd done and nothing comes up - it must be a bug  :-\

I have received the e-mail and must admit that I am quite impressed so far. Luckily I have ancestors in Wiltshire so as that is covered I have filled in a few gaps. However my biggest interest is in Essex so await that with great interest. Yes the cost is high but I am only looking for confirmation of a few missing details so for me it is not extortionate.
