Is Canning Town not classed as London  >:(

Found what I thought was my dad aged 4 months and my uncle Bill 2 years in Bethnal Green, thought maybe they'd moved in the 4 months since dad's birth....WRONG family!!! That was the last of my 'spare' credits down the drain.

So where are they??? :o

30 CREDITS?

That is extortion.

why do you think that ?

Why, well think about it.  You only get to see an individual household this time, whereas before you got sight of all the neighbouring households as well.  In close-knit communities this has often provided me with valuable clues.  You often find other family connections living close by.

I think it's way overpriced.  Makes it very expensive if you're looking for someone you don't know much about, or someone with a very common name who may not be living with their family, someone who isn't where you might have expected them to be, or just make a mistake.

Is Canning Town not classed as London

Was it not part of West Ham ie. Essex back then?

I've just had a look for two people who may have been living in London in 1911, both common names.  Quite a lot of results, but no use without the place of birth shown in the search results.  No way could I afford to look them all up at 10 credits per transcript.

Yes, Essex.

I eagerly went looking for my Londoners and could hardly find any of them - but I know from marriage and death certs in the 19teens and 1920s that quite a lot of them had moved a little (and it's really only a little!) eastwards to become Essex Girls.  I presume my shoemaker ancestor was busy making the white high heeled shoes for them all.  ;D  (Apologies to all Essex girls - including my mother -  for the stereotyping!)

What I really miss (and have said to them, among numerous other suggestions and comments) about the 1911 site is that you can't connect family groups to check you've got the right Fred Bloggs age 47.  (I also suggested that it would be nice if they could put place of birth on the results listing, as you can include it as a criterion in your search anyway).  There's no fuzzy or soundexed searching on names at the moment (but I suspect that might come).

I've no idea how many people they've invited into the beta test, but I've been impressed by the speed, and the quality of the imaging is superb. At the moment, you can only download the images, not view them on-screen (to reduce load on their servers I think).  Which is quite good, as it means I can't forget to save them.

You can also download to a spreadsheet all the records you've paid to see, which I think is probably going to be rather useful.  Not sure how, but it does like a really good idea!

But I have already found a couple of transcription errors!  The reporting system for transcription errors looks very easy to use.

But if you specify the correct places of birth in your search, the results will be limited only to those matching the data you've put in.

But you can ?

You can put Joe Bloggs born xxx in xxx, relationship to head and add another name in the family,ie mum or dad.Or even another sibling if you're not sure if parents are still alive.

I've only done my direct ancestors for now-don't want to bankrupt myself just before Xmas  ;D

Hopefully it won't be too long before it comes on a subscription website.

Maybe Alan could explain how to turn them into black and white to print...please :-*
