re the handwriting i reckon a LOT are going to be better presented than previous census, as they will have had the forms in the comfort of their homes to fill in and been able to take time, whereas the previous were done on the doorstep, ive certainly found the ones ive d/l so far are excellent to read

This is the first time we have been able to view the individual household schedules  :)

The original schedules (on the earlier censuses) were filled in by the householder or close family/friend/neighbour/even enumerator.  These were then copied onto the pages we are used to viewing by the enumerators - probsbly in the comfort of their own homes.

Poor enumerators  - all that different handwriting to decipher. It must have been like doing 1000 lines :-\

I was amazed at just how good my grandfather's writing was, because he was a Bricklayer, and I don't think he was very well educated.

Thing is, Nick, I don't think we can always be sure that we are looking at the subject's own handwriting.  Someone who couldn't write very well might have got someone else to fill the form in for them.  Also some would be intimidated by an official form (that can still be the case today!)

I remember Flora Thompson in "Lark Rise to Candleford" commenting that while almost all the people in her village could write, many felt self-conscious and embarrassed that their handwriting wasn't good enough, and would still sign official documents with an X.  I'm sure there were people who felt the same 30 years on.

Have a look in your spam account it appears some peoples went straight to their spam box  ::)
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Well, unless my grandfather got someone to also forge his signature, that was his own handwriting  :)

P.S. It would be useful to see the entries either side of the address, to compare handwriting, but I'm not going to do that whilst the pages cost £3 each  ::)

Just a thought ~ no one can blame the enumerators for bad handwriting on these images

Naughty ancestors!

My great great uncle had lovely handwriting but then he was a shipping clerk, which explains why he filled in the form and not his mother I suppose. ::)

Just had an email from 1911 customer support team,

Your enquiry has been received and has been assigned call number 6041 ....

I have four of these emails with 4 different numbers, but
I haven't raised any queries ???

anyone else had this problem ?

so now I will have to raise a query about the non existant query...

But overall liking the site, but as previously stated expensive, and one of the transcripts I wanted to view wasn't available.

so probably an 8 out of 10 :)

While I understand the huge expense in digitising this census I do feel slightly conned that we are being asked to pay so much for what is a test site ........it's not possible to view all counties, it has faults and they want us to fill in a questionnaire!

It must be the time of year............call me scrooge!! >:( >:( >:(

Probably a daft question, but I'll ask it anyway before I buy some credits!  :-[

My printer's packed up, so will I be okay downloading the original page and saving it onto my PC?
