*Completed*Richard PONTING from Somerset in Surrey
« on: Wednesday 17 December 08 10:00 GMT (UK) »
Could SKS please have a look for Richard PONTING, born about 1814 in Newton St Loe, Somerset, in Surrey in 1871, 1861 and maybe even 1851?

I only have this entry for him in 1881, but it shows that his daughters were born in Surrey as early as 1851.

1881 Census of Croydon, Sry
RG11/ 0821 / 14/ page 21
Moffatt Rd
Richard PONTING   Head   M   Male   67   St Low [Newton St Loe], Somerset, England   Gardener
Ann PONTING   Daur   U   Female   31   Norwood, Surrey, England   Dress Maker
Emma PONTING   Daur   U   Female   28   Norwood, Surrey, England   Dress Maker

Many thanks for your help.

There's an 1861 entry for Richard Panting, right age, right area with daughters Ann and Emma, who also appear to be the right ages. Wife Mary b 1821 Ireland.

1881 shows Richard to be a gardener and 1861 census above also shows gardener as occupation so it's probably the right family.

Many thanks to everyone for this great help. I've now got a good overview of this man and his family.

It's difficult enough doing this kind of research without people having such various ways of transcribing their names!! But many thanks to people for such clever detective work.

Kind regards

How fantastic. Thank you VERY much for persevering with this; imagine finding him transcribed under Pauling?! How many other relatives are hiding under improbable renderings of their names?

I really appreciate your kindness in keeping looking till you found this elusive couple.

Best wishes

Phil Candy
