Hi Stuart,

I have found the Beckers on 1901 Census.  They had quite a big family, including two sons, Ernest Thomas who died in WW1 and Stewart Charles, who for some weird reason my husband Peter's mum told me, was called "Uncle Bunty".  Is that the brother who was married to your great aunt?

Thomas Salmond Aitchison married an Anna Fuller in 1874, just months after Jemima died. She was 22 and he was 38.  I tried to find his or her will...but never found it.

Morning June,

Ernie Becker was in the same battalion - 16th Royal Scots - as my great uncle, Willie Roxburgh.  They both died on 1 July 1916 on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.  Charlie Becker married Grace Fraser in 1924.  He'd been shot during the Great War.  'My' Becker is Frank; he married my great auntie Jessie, the sister of my granddad Tam Roxburgh.

I didn't know that there was a son named Frank.

Ernie was part of "Macrae's Battalion".. and got a mention in the book written about them. Have you read it?  We have seen a letter written to Kate Aitchison about Ernie's death sent from a friend who served with him.

I have a couple of photos of Ernie, and one of Ernest Becker the hairdresser. Do you have any?  I also have one of Kate Aitchison...though is not a terribly clear one.

Both Ernie and my great uncle Willie Roxburgh were in McCrae's Battalion. I've got 2 copies of Jack Alexander's book - one dedicated to Ernie and Willie by the author.  I hadn't twigged that Ernie was mentioned in the book - and was a poet!

I'd love a copy of a photo of Ernie for my tree!

I will have a look for those images of Ernest Peter Becker, Ernest Thomas Becker and Kate.  I had them on an old computer which has since gone to computer heaven...but have them on a memory stick somewhere.  Just need to locate it
