Can anyone please help deciphering the marriage certificate of Peter Becker and Kate Aitchison in 1886?

There is a birth entry which looks likely for Kate on IGI:

Catherine Aitchison b 30 MAR 1867 in Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh. Parents showing as THOMAS SALMOND AITCHISON and JEMIMA BROWN

Nothing jumping out as yet for Ernest (not a particularly Scottish name!).

There is a death showing in Edinburgh in 1873 for a Jemima Brown Aitchison which would fit with the Kate's mother showing as deceased at the time of the 1886 marriage.

This is the closest I can see in the 1881 census with a possible second marriage for father Thomas - everyone showing as born in Edinburgh unless shown:

Just noticed that Kate's father Thomas also down as deceased in 1886. He looks to have died not long after the 1881 census. This looks to be his entry on the Wills & Testaments section on SP:

Thomas Salmond Aitchison, 19/09/1881, 61 Queen Street, Edinburgh, d. 05/05/1881 at Edinburgh, intestate - Edinburgh Sheriff Court Inventories, Ref SC70/1/209

  Might be a bit harder to determine parents for Ernest, he shows as born in Germany on the 1891 census, everyone else shows as born in Edinburgh:

Ernest P Becker 31, Hairdresser's Assistant, b. Germany Prussia
Catherine Becker 24
Emilie F Becker 5
Ernest T Becker 4
Katheline C Becker 1

Address:  5 Mackenzie Pl, Edinburgh

I would say Ernest's age on his marriage entry looks like 24 rather than 19. Still slightly out going by the age above.

I did find the German connection - apparently quite hard to follow up. A bit more slowly that perhaps I should; it's not as if there are no famous Germans called Becker!!!

Hi Stuart

You might be lucky on IGI and find details on Ernest's family there. There are IGI entries for Germany (just scroll down on the countries list). I couldn't easily see an entry for Ernest, but you may be able to find other siblings which might give you clues as to where in Germany Ernest was from. First thing though you need to establish the name for Ernest's mother. Try contacting SP on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/contactus/form.aspx?issue=24 and ask for help with Ernest's parents' details.

The 1901 census has a number of Beckers from Germany, maybe other siblings also came to Scotland (?).
