Lewes area Parish records BAX - COMPLETED

Many thanks Chris, Kerry - very useful indeed, as it all fills in some crucial parts of the jigsaw!.

I am a bit confused by the geography of Lews. I now have references to

Lewes St John (where someone is supposed to have lived)
Lewes St John sub castro (burial)
Lewes St Ann (marriage)

Were these all in the same parish? i.e. will I need to look them up in one set of registers or in several?

Also, does anyone have the Newick parish registers with any references to BAX anywhere? I know of the marriages, but I can't track down some births.

Stephen, you mention Quaker connections.  Here are 2 marriages from the SMI that might help,

I presume and I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but they are different churches in Lewes which is one parish.  I tried to find it on Genuki but am not having too much luck.

If you find Lewes in the left hand side bar on this site you can find photos of all the Lewes churches, sub castro is a bit grand, almost worth a visit next time I am in Lewes I think.

Chris in 1066 is our resident expert on Lewes so he may blow holes in my theory but there were at least 6 different churches in Lewes at one time and all will have had their own registers.   All Saints, St Anne, St John sub Castro, St Michael, St Thomas a Becket at Cliffe and Southover St John Baptist.   Not to mention those in places so close as to be almost part of the town.   Some are no longer used as churches.  All registers will now be held at the Record Office but Chris has lots of transcripts of various bits.

Hi Stephen

Sillgen was correct in her listing of the Lewes Churches except St Annes is often referred to as St Annes Without - i.e. outside the castle walls; although the only redundunt church at the moment is All Saints.

Kerryb thought St John Sub Castro looked rather grand, but it is the plainest church in Lewes as it was the working mans church and as such has no embelishments - but I supppose there is beauty in plainess

I have looked through my data files for Lewes for the surname Bax, but could only find those two entries except the following:

Alfred Ridley Bax, F.S.A Barrister & Historian

FSA - Fellow of the Society of Archaeologists who did a lot of memorial transcription work in the 1890's

I think if you google 'Bax' you would get lots of entries in his name

Well they do say beauty is in the eye of the beholder Chris and I certainly think its grand. 

Its not that unusual to see flint churches round here but I don't think there are that may with those turrets or are they castellations on the top.  In fact it puts me in mind of Lewes Prison.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

I guess I need also to look at the non-conformist churches... the Jireh Chaple intrigues me as apparently my ancestor William had 'Huntingdonian' tendencies and I see that many of the Jireh Chapel records (Huntington was buried there) are now in the Record Office. Must visit when I can.

Another source we have mentions the Unitarians, but I do not know where any local Unitarian churches were. Any ideas?

Does anyone have good copies or transcripts of non-conformist records in the Newick/Chailey/Wivelsfield area?

Thanks Chris - We have come across Alfred Ridley Bax (the father of Arnold Bax the composer) and seen some of his work, but nothing in the Newick area so far.
