Lewes area Parish records BAX - COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 16 December 08 20:00 GMT (UK) »
Hello. My ancestor was William Bax, a wheelwright in Newick, 1795-1860.

We know about his life and descendants, and are now trying to track down his relatives/ancestors in the Newick, Chailey, Lewes area.

We have evidence of a Richard Bax marrying at Lewes St Ann in 21 JUN 1808 and of a Richard and William owning land in Barcombe parish nearby (Town Littleworth) at the same time.

We also have evidence of a John Bax born very near, at Chailey.

Does anyone have any information on any BAX births, marriages and deaths in Parish records or anywhere else in the Lewes, Newick, Chailey area, with these names or any others? Any before 1800 are especially handy.

Many thanks for all your great work.

Stephen Bax

Hi Stephen

Checked out the Sussex Marriage Index and could only find one marriage in Newick as below, one in Lewes that you mention and none in Chailey prior to 1837.

They seem to be prior to 1800 further west in Sussex there is a Richard Bax marrying 8 April 1792 in cuckfield to Mary Wells.

16 October 1817
William Bax bach
Sophia Hobbs spinster
married at newick both of this parish
witnesses - Edward Hobbs and Eliz Hall

Thanks for your speedy and interesting replies.

This one is new to me - is there any way of getting more detail on it online?

Richard Bax
3 July 1782
Newick

Also this one is new to me, and very interesting as we have evidence of links with Cuckfield and Slaugham:

Richard Bax marrying 8 April 1792 in cuckfield to Mary Wells.

I would not be surprised if they are linked. Is there any way of getting more detail?

Our hope is that we can find a link back to the large Quaker Bax family which was just across the border in Capel, Surrey.

Many thanks, - by the way - any information about any early Baxes in Sussex and Surrey, no matter how remote it seems, is very welcome!

Stephen Bax

Unofrtunately in both cases that is all the information available on my sources, but there may be other information available on primary sources ie parish registers, although maybe not for the burial record.  Often that will be the only information.

In the case of Newick that's East Sussex Record Office and Cuckfield comes under West Sussex Record Office.
