HAWKINS, Plymouth 1861
« on: Tuesday 16 December 08 10:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My gt grandfather's family moved from Donaghadee, Co. Down at some point.

In 1861 they were at:

?Millbey/Willbay House, Plymouth

M.A. Hawkins      Head      Mar     51     Dressmaker      b Ireland
Hugh Hawkins    son                     18      Baker Confectioner b Ireland
William                 son                     30      Royal Navy b Ireland

Hugh is in fact Hugo Francis, but he used Francis as his known name. He also joined the RN and his service record shows his first ship 1871. He married Elizabeth Ann Crabb (see other entry) in 1862.

Does anyone know of this family? (Long shot, but if so, we could be related).

I would like to find my gt gt grandfather ... I am assuming that MA Hwakins was quite likely Margaret. Mary would be unlikely given the son's name of William.  I would guess that perhaps the father was also William in the long standing tradition of naming first son ...

I would also like to trace son William, my gt uncle,  as I have a photograph of him in his Sailor's uniform, from a newspaper article in 1945 when my father received his DSC.

Francis and wife settled in Portsea, and Elizabeth was known as Eliza. Their daughter Kate was my grandmother, who married Charles Fletcher.

It might be significant that their first child in Portsea, Francis, was born in 1871 about the time Hugo signed up.

TIA

Rob

Hi

Found this in 1871.... Not sure about them as you make no mention of a daughter but thought I would post just in case;

Stoke Damerel, Devon
41 Charlotte Str
William HAWKINS head mar 62 Naval pensioner b Ireland
Mary Ann Hawkins wife 60 b Ireland
Anna M Hawkins dau unm 29 milliner b Ireland

the daughter's occupation seems to fit with MA Hawkins in 1861 being a dressmaker and William , the dad is a Naval pensioner ..which seems to fit with Hugh and William being in the RN too.

Can't seem to find Anna in 1861

In 1891 The above mary Ann Hawkins is with her daughter and son-in-law in Beer ferris Devon
William H Taylor head mar 55 retired metropolitan police b Tiverton
Anna M wife 51 b Ireland
Mary Ann HAWKINS wid mother-in-law 81 b Ireland

Hi Deb

Cannot find the 1881 entry for Ann M in London ... can you point me to this record please.

I am trying to find any children of Anna and William Taylor as they are close relatives of mine!

Thanks,

Rob

Many thanks Deb, I did find it eventually. Hidden away eh?

William is in "The Hamoaze" in Plymouth. This is the building which became
Admiralty House in 1935.

I can't find any children of this marriage ...

Anyone else?

Rob

PS Still trying to link my Benjamin Crabb into the Crabb lines ... hmmm ...tricky this one.

Some certs to get now but I have followed this trail ...

Looking for William Henry's parents (he married Anna Matlida Hawkins).

I find William and Sarah in Tiverton - he's a shopkeeper/grocer - follow through census data and eventually we find
them until 1861, 1871 is a mystery (anyone???), but  then ...

In 1881 Sarah is a widow with grandson Bertie George 8yrs - born when Will+Anna married !!! Fits

In 1881 We find Will on duty, Anna (TAYOR!!) visiting friends, the Chambers. Head is a Master French Polisher

We find Bertie G married Mary Louise Offer 1896 in Bristol, and in 1901 he's there with young family and his
occupation is FRENCH POLISHER.

Some nice circumstantial evidence to now follow up with marriage and birth certs. Fingers crossed as this has been a dead end for a while.
