Staves Buildings Hull
« on: Monday 15 December 08 12:25 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know anything about these buildings? I have just received a copy of a birth certificate of an ancestor of mine and she was born at 4 Staves Buildings, Porter Street, Hull in 1847. Her mother's maiden name was Staves so the buildings must have had something to do with her maternal family.

Any info would be appreciated. Not much comes up on Google about these buildings other than people living in them.

Thanks, it was just curiosity on my part ;)

I know the buildings were sold off about 1884 and since then a lot of the properties on that road have become commercial investments.

The census records show my great great gransparents living at 4 Staves Buildings in 1881. There is a photo of the buildings in the Hull archives, I do have a copy but need to dig it out of my dads loft. Might be nice to exchange info,  Hope to hear from you.(*)

I don't have any specific info on these particular dwellings but, in general, where properties were built "off" roads (in courts and back terraces in the early/mid 19th C.) the names were often chosen by the builder or owner of the parcel of land.

This is why Hull had so many "Terraces", "Places" and "Buildings" where the actual name was the same (Ada's, Frank's, Mary Ann's, etc). The builder would typically use his surname or his children's names for his latest enterprise.

My guess is that Mr Staves, the builder, built Staves Buldings.

Hope this helps.
