Hi Parky96,

It is quite easy.

1. Go to the tree you want to download and select the 'Overview' tab.

Let us know if you have difficulties here.

2. In the right-hand-side panel you will see Manage Tree in a box marked Tools. Select it.

3. On that new page you will find a link labelled (export tree). Select it.

You will be warned that the process may take some time. Agree.

4. After a while (it can take a few minutes for me) you are offered another display including a link labelled Download "<your tree name>" in GEDCOM file format. Select it.

The rest is just like downloading anything else from the internet.

Good Luck.

Being realistic the easiesdt way is to download the file as a gedcom from the tree overview page and save it to your pc, but there are a couple of things to note when you do this;

Firstly gedcom files are text only so any images you have added will not transfer. These should be copied from the original sources if possible in preference to images you have uploaded to ancestry.

Secondly to view the file as a tree you will need a sofware programme installed on your pc, although you can view a ged file as a word document it is a very long winded document full of codes and blank fields which will be difficult to understand unless you know the gedcom coding intimately.

To download (send) your tree from Ancestry go to your tree overview page  and select the "manage my tree" option

On the page that opens select the "export tree" option

Ancestry will then send the file to you as an e-mail attachment, . to your pc and any additional disc/stick you want for extra security against accidental loss.

Glen

Hi Ambers,

You may like to take a a look at my comment here:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,306449.msg1879235.html#msg1879235

You may be better off downloading it now and then spending your remaining time downloading as many census records as you can. They wont come with your tree and you wont have access to them after your sub ends.

The last thing you should do is delete your tree from Ancestry. That way if they use your information after you have gone they have no excuse that you 'left it there'.

Hi Paul, :)

Thank you for the extra information and the tip about deleting my Tree, as I had never thought about that...I will read the Link later.

I have already taken a copy of every census I have found with my family names on.....was I grateful for that when my Hard Drive completely burned out, phew :)

I think you're getting confused with Genes Reunited, Glen  :)   When you export your tree with Ancestry, (you were correct with the procedure up until the very last line), you will see a box which basically says "Are you sure ?  This could take some time", and when you hit "Yes", it will start compiling the Gedcom file, and you will see the progress in a small text box.  It's vital that you don't change anything whist it's doing this.  When it has finished, you can then download the Gedcom file by right-clicking and choosing "Save Target As".  I always change the suggested save name to one which includes the date.

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately even doing exactly as you said i am unable to open up the tree once it as been saved to my documents as it says the file is too large to open by my service provider is there any other way of opening it?
Also i purchased family tree maker 2009 platinum ed. to gather all the info on from ancestry and i have been unable to load this to my comp either. Could the reason for this be that too many photos etc are stored on my comp so using up space that this programme needs? Would a deluxe version of this programme have been better? It also includes a 6month ancestry subscription with it, but the way ancestry as been lately i am thinking of holding off using for a while and using it at a later date.

I suggest you save it to another family tree programme not your documents.  A free one, PAF,  is here,

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

free family history software, on the right hand column.  Export it from ancestry and import it into the paf.   From this you can 'save as' into your flash drive.

The 'companion' will print out three generations, but for about £3 you can get the full version which does many generations and different styles.

You could also export if from ancestry to 'tribal pages', well recommended.
