William McAra
« on: Sunday 14 December 08 15:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have traced back to William McAra 1871 census born abt. 1830 Scotland, Married to Ann born abt. 1829 Scotland. They have a family of five children and possibly a sixth William that died 1856.
The children on the census are:
Annie born abt. 1857 Plumstead Kent
Margaret born abt. 1861 Plumstead Kent
Robert B. (Balgarnie) born abt.1863 Plumstead Kent
John born abt. 1867 Plumstead Kent
Alexander born abt. 1870 Plumstead Kent
I believe I found the marriage 1855 Lewisham and children’s birth registered Lewisham. Robert Balgarnie would be my GGfather.
If anyone knows of, or comes across the family I would certainly appreciate a message.

Mike

Hi Mike

There appears to be at least one more child, Thomas William  - birth Mar Qtr 1859.
It would make sense, especially with Scottish parents, to name the next son born after little William died 1856, the same name - in this case as middle name.

FreeBMD, for ref:
MARRIAGE of parents: Sep Qtr 1855 - William McARA and Ann BROWNLEE
BIRTH William  - Dec Qtr 1855
DEATH William  - Dec Qtr 1856
BIRTH Ann  - Mar Qtr 1857
BIRTH Thomas William - Mar Qtr 1859
BIRTH Margaret - Mar Qtr 1861 (so is possibly no more than 5 or 6 mths old at very most in Census 1861 )

Census 1861: 16 Upper Burrage Place, Plumstead, Kent
RG9 /  Piece: 408 /  Folio: 65 /  Page: 40
Head: William CAREY 30, Blacksmith, b Scotland
Wife: Ann CAREY 33, b Scotland
Dau: Ann CAREY 4, Scholar, b Plumstead
Son: Thomas CAREY 2, b Plumstead
Dau: Margaret CAREY 4 mths, b Plumstead

Sad to see, then that little Thomas William also appears to have died, at about age 5.
DEATH: Sep Qtr 1864 - Thomas William McARA - Lewisham

Was hoping the 1861 might have had a more specific POB for the parents  :'(.    William died  1879, is that right?
But the occupation Blacksmith could be important, as it may have been passed down father to son.

It would be interesting to know what brought him down to that part of Kent (near Woolwich); I'm wondering, if there may be an Army connection - especially with he being a Smith . The marriage Cert may be the best next step to advancement.

Cheers

I received the marriage certificate for William McAra and Ann Brownlee.

Williams’s occupation was Artificer and his father’s name was John McAra also Artificer.

Ann Brownlee, her fathers name was David occupation Manager Cotton Factory. Her place of residence at time of marriage, Tradestone Glasgow North Britain.

I cant find a birth for William. I have a 1851 census the name is McAree, on the census it looks like McAra. he is a private in the 33 regiment born Sterling Scotland.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Mike

That's great news for the marriage certificate - and it certainly all appears to tie in nicely!

A little later, but I believe either description holds well for your William....
http://www.census1891.com/occupations-a.htm
Artificer -  A soldier mechanic who does repairs
Artificer  - Skilled or artistic worker or craftsman

Could you please tell me a couple of things:
Where is he in 1851 - the reference for the Census?
On the marriage cert:
How old are Anne & William stated to be
Is either father stated to be deceased?
Who were the witness'
What was William's address?

And lastly, do you want a look for Ann's father too, or have you already got her sorted out?

Cheers  ;D

Thanks Mike

Have just replied to your PM too  -  I'm a bit behind in catching up :P as I had to nip out, so I didn't first see you've posted on-topic re:  the info off the marriage cert.

This is from the IGI (extracted records) - might be a contender for your William's father?
1810: John McARA chr 16 Apr 1810 St Ninians to parents: Alexander McARA and Jean McEWAN
1831: John McARA married Mary MAXWELL 27 Apr St Ninians

Can't find any children for John & Mary....

An Alexander McARA and Jean McEWAN also had the following all christened in Crieff, Perth
James 1815
Peter 1818
Alexander 1821
Daniel 1825
Jean 1827
