Help Needed Please
« on: Sunday 14 December 08 14:08 GMT (UK) »
Yesterday received my family tree - mothers side.  Going back quite a way, but quite a few gaps.
The families seems to be McNally, Banigan, Girvan,, Bradley, Thompson, Foster, Quin.  With lots and lots of offshoots.  Areas seem to be Stewartstown, dungannon, Coalisland.  Please help with anything you can.

Many thanks

Carole

Welcome to Rootschat. If you could give more details like names, dates or places we might be able to find some information for you or to suggest where you can search.

Thank you, this is the information I have so far, McNally family of Stewartstown dates back to a John McNally b.c. 1856 d.1904 he married in 1893 to Mary Ann Brannigan b.c.1867.  I have the name of Johns Father Michael McNally but unfortunately no date of birth.  Mary Anns father was a Patrick Branigan again no date of birth.  This side of the family leads to my grandfather John McNally who married my grandmother Agnes Bradley.  I have some more leads to work out to follow the family tree and to understand how the names relate to each other.  Any help you could give me I would greatly appreciate.

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages began 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages) so there will be no birth certificate for John McNally, etc.
IGI (www.familysearch.org) lists quite a few Mary Brannigans with father Patrick and several are in Co. Tyrone so there's really no way of knowing if any are the one you're looking for without already knowing the mother's name.

Eventually the 1911 and then 1901 census will be available on National Archives, Dublin website if you haven't searched them already.

Griffith's Valuation can be searched here:
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php

Meanwhile, the best place to get more details on the family might be church records (if they exist).

Thank you, for the information, I shall carry on with the search.  It is afterall very enjoyable and thankyou for the hyperlinks.  I have managed to trace my fathers side back to the late 16 hundreds which is great, just my mothers I seem to be struggling with but will battle on.

Thank you again

Carole
