Sheffield Workhouse
« on: Sunday 14 December 08 02:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi ;D...I've discovered that my maternal great grandmother Rose Ann Melford/Milford (1838-c1901) was a resident in a Sheffield workhouse in 1861-1862 and would like more information or lists of the residents. Does anyone know how I would find this?

Also, I can't find any details of her after the 1891 Census. (Rose Ann married George Handley in 1862) can anyone look this up please? :-*

Kind regards
Hunnyb22

Hi Barbara and Carolanne...Thanks for your help and the links. I'll certainly look on the workhouse website.

By 1862, both George and Rose Ann were married and living in a tenement not far from Rose Ann's mother (Hannah Melford 1816-1883). For what reason would they have been able to leave the workhouse? I know it wasn't a prison but to get out they would surely have had to have been self sufficient?

Kind regards

The workhouse website is a mine of information about the whole system.  There are links at the left for subjects like Workhouse Life, Entering and Leaving, etc, worth having a good read through it.

Hi Barbara ;D...Yes, I looked at the website last night and it's full of information, they even have a list of inmates. I discovered that Rose Ann was in the Fir Vale workhouse (not on list but by deduction)  so I assume that George was there too. :-\

How would I find them on the 1861 Census? I've looked through the Ancestor website but it only gives detailed information on the 1881 Census.

Thanks once again for your help.

Kind regards

If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry you won't be able to view the full details, only 1881 is free to view.

Carolanne already gave you all the information for the 1861 census - that's all the image shows

1861 census theres a Rose A Milford born about 1839 Ireland - Inmate - Sheffield Union Workhouse

Hi Barbara...Yes, I realise that but as I'm on a low income I can't afford to subscribe to Ancestry. I've gleaned a lot of information from FreeBMD, such as George's marriage and death records and those of Thomas (1814-1878) and Hannah Melford (1816-1883) they're a mine of information too. There's also FreeCen.

Thanks once again for your help.

Kind regards
