I'm afraid this is all I have at the moment.
« on: Saturday 13 December 08 12:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I'll start by saying I am in a state of utter confusion. My skill
with these computors is probably less than that of a small child.even the "Help" option confused me.I apologize in advance.I began a bit unprepared,it's a folly of my youth.I am attempting to find any remaining relations in Ulster to my I believe great great grandfather James Carter who I'm told immigrated to America hidden in cargo ship.He left in the mid 1700s I think..Arrived in Virginia.Agine I apologize for this skimmpy info I'll contact my Grandmother as soon as I can.But I had to start somewhere. If Anyone thinks they can work with what I have given as of now. Please let me know.
Thank you.

Welcome to Rootschat. You've made a good start by joining and making your first post.
Unfortunately it's not easy to do any research in Ireland for the period you are interested in even with important details like an exact place. There are no census records, vital certificates (births, deaths, marriages) and few church records for 1700s anywhere in Ireland.
The best thing to do would be to research your ancestor James Carter in all available American records as you are more likely to find details there than in Ireland.

Hi Lyons22,

Welcome to Rootschat.  I am fairly new here, found this wonderful site in early October this year.  Everyone is very helpful, and they all try to help each other.  I found the site via the chatroom, so I share my first experience with you, and hope you will laugh with me.

I had never been in a chatroom of any sort ever before.  I did not even realise I was in one, until all these different coloured lines of text kept coming up.   After about ten minutes of watching I typed on my keyboard "How to Exit please" and all these answers came, mostly asking me not to leave but to ask for help.

So here I am, three months later, a regular in the chatroom, and between you and me, I have been able to figure out more about my PC just by asking people in the chatroom, much better than the technical manuals etc.

Cheers, may the luck of the Irish help you along, and one of the very best ways to start your tree ?  on sheet of paper, put your name at bottom, then above that put your parents, and then draw line in half from top to bottom and so above your Dad put his parents and above your mum put her parents, AND then the parents of the parents, always with any bits or quick little notes about each name until you have filled up one side, either Dad's or Mum's.

Then choose one side to follow up on, stick sheet of paper near your PC, and just take it from there.

Do you have any family history dedicated software?  Whether you do or don't - I think there will be a thread on rootschat to help you there too

Cheers,  Welcome and get at it !!

Ulster is part of Ireland. Even for those of us living here it's not easy to get information on ancestors from 1700s.
