Hi again Robin

Meant to say that I really love your idea of your Christmas gift to your friend.    (Perhaps she'll get hooked on genealogy too) ?     :)

I found on Papers Past an ad. for Scotland asking for people to emigrate to NZ, would love to see one advertising in England, I could print it off and put in the history album.

You can find some emigration posters on the following site.  >>

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nzbound/siteindex.htm

Scroll down to "Navigate To" >>  then to"Emigration Posters".

(Actually there's lots of interesting info here  ... accounts of what conditions were like aboard the emigrant ships etc. etc.  ... so even if you can't yet locate the ship on which the Harris's arrived, you can still probably "paint a picture" of the era).

Good luck ... I'm sure your friend will love her "pressie".    ;)

Hi Robin

There is always a possibility that that the Taupo or any other Steamer may have transferred the Harris's from another port, as shows on here http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/unionnz.html As you will know our ancestors can end up in completely different places from the area they arrived. Just to keep us on our toes ;D

In reply to all of you - I certainly found the immigration posters and what a co-incidence, one of them was advertising the "British King" which was the very ship one of my friend's ancestors came out on so it was so appropriate, I printed that one out so fast.
I will try the White Pages and look for Harris in Masterton, could strike gold there.
I am still awaiting the death certificate so will probably get more info from that.
Thanks so much to you all, Happy Christmas, a bit of a gloomy day here, the lovely shop I work in has been hit on Thursday night by a low-life arsonist, one third burnt to ashes, they are going to be up and running again they say, but when a family business gets hit like this it is so unfair, I am not even part of the family but have worked for them for 8 years and they are like family.

Hi, Thanks for your thought about the arsonist, presumably it is the same one has now struck a kindy 3 nights later and within just a few kilometres from the shop I work in, we are getting a temporary shop in tomorrow until the old shop is rebuilt, so no job loss thank goodness.
I have now received the death certificate printout for John Harris, he had more children than I realised.
Someone on this site kindly gave me his first 4 children in an 1871 census, his eldest daughter Hannah predeceased him, she died in 1927, he died in February 1929 and is buried in Norsewood.
On the death printout it gives his living issue as Male 63 (William), Male 60 (David), Female 58, (Elizabeth Ellen), Male 55, Female 52, Female 44.
That makes 7 children with the death of Hannah in 1927. That is 3 children I have no names for.
I will try to phone a few Harris's of Masterton and try my luck there. I have given up on trying to find the ship they came on although on the printout it gives time in NZ as 55 years which takes it to about 1874 which was when the Vogel scheme allowed ag. labs. to travel for free to this land of milk and honey. It also gives John's occupation as Retired farmer.
If anyone has any ideas about the other children of John and Sarah Harris of Norsewood it would be very gratefully received.

Hi, Robin.

I have John HARRIS (who married Sarah PERKINS) recorded as John HARRIS (Snr), suggesting that there is also a John HARRIS (Jnr).

I have a John HARRIS (b. abt 1875), m. Clara Bertha FISCHER (dau. of Friedrich August FISCHER and his wife, Amalia Frederica (surname unknown), who emig. from Hamburg, Germany, 16 Dec 1874, aboard "Fritz Reuter" arriving Napier, NZ, on 17 Mar 1875). I assume, but cannot prove, that this is John HARRIS (Jnr) as this matches with the son's age on the death cert. John and Clara HARRIS had a son, Ivan Ernest HARRIS b. abt 1915, d. 13 Jun 1941, Egypt (WWII).

There is an Archie HARRIS at Makotuku School (Bush Advocate, 04 Dec 1888). Makotuku is near(ish) to Norsewood, but I have nothing to confirm he is related.

Bush Advocate, Sat 22 Dec 1888
Marriage
O'HARA - HARRIS : On Dec 19, at the office and before the Registrar, Norsewood, David, third son of Mr Henry O'HARA of Ballinacard, County Antrim, Ireland to Elizabeth Ellen, second daughter of John HARRIS, Ngamoko, Norsewood.

Hi Robin,
I have just stumbled on your post about the Harris Family. Given that it was some time ago, you may well have found the information you were looking for. If not, I can help. I have traced the Harris family back to the  late 1600s.
