Any more Harris children in Norsewood/Masterton
« on: Wednesday 10 December 08 02:03 GMT (UK) »
I have John and Sarah Harris who emigrated from the Stratford-upon-Avon area about 1873, they settled at Norsewood although some of their grandchildren seem to be centred at Masterton.
John died in Dannevirke on 12/2/1929 and is buried in Norsewood - Sarah died in Norsewood on 23/1/1915 aged 71.
I have a photo of their headstone and it does not state how many children they had.
When they came they had 4 children,
Hannah Maria Perkins Harris born about 1864
William Harris born about 1867
David Harris born about 1870
Elizabeth Ellen Harris born in 1872.
Can anyone see any more children for John and Sarah.
One more question - does anyone know on what ship they emigrated from England. I really would love that question answered if possible.

Either of the parents death certificates would tell you how many children they had and ages.

I have actually sent for John's death certificate and am hoping it will not be too long, but am aware that it would probably show his living children, I was aware that if any more had been born and had died since, they may not show.
I also have another reason for trying to fast track this - I am doing this history for a very good friend and I was trying to tie up loose ends and present it to her for Christmas.
It is another reason I was hoping that somewhere out there was the information about which ship they came on, I have no clue how to find out that information.

Hi Robin

I was browsing Paperspast and found an entry for a Mr and Mrs Harris in the Evening Post arriving in the Port of Wellington on June 23rd 1876 on the ship Taupo.
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast

It's a possibility.

Hi Robin

You could try contacting the Petone Settlers Museum http://www.huttcity.govt.nz/Council-Facilities/Museums--Galleries/Petone-Settlers-Museum/Passenger-Database/ Although I looked on their database I didn't find an entry for the Harris's but I don't think the database is complete. Also you could inquire at the Wellington Library http://www.wcl.govt.nz/

Keep in mind though that they moight not have entered through the Port of Wellington. I was just browsing that area as it was the closest to where they settled.

Thanks for all suggestions, I have not found the Harris family yet but have read all about the Vogel scheme and realise that the family probably came over in 1874 when the scheme advertised for married agricultural workers - John Harris was an agricultural labourer in Weston Subedge, Glos.
They probably came through the port of Napier.
I found on Papers Past an ad. for Scotland asking for people to emigrate to NZ, would love to see one advertising in England, I could print it off and put in the history album.
Thanks for all the help,
Robin

Hi Robin

It seems that this vessel "Taupo", was in fact a steamer, just working in NZ coastal waters - (so it wouldn't be the ship that transported your Harris family from England).

Sorry, haven't been able to find anything on passenger lists, either.

From John's death cert. ("Years in NZ"), you may of course get another clue as to when the family arrived here ?
And as John appears to have had a very long life, it might be worth checking in the area in which he lived, to see if records exist for early pioneers  ... perhaps a (local) newspaper published an obituary ?
