Welcome to Rootschat.

William's birth registration (Jun 1918) lists his mother's maiden name as Wraight, so his parents marriage must be this one:

Dec 1913 West Ham
John William Shepherd
Elsie Wraith

I noticed that there was another Shepherd/Wraight marriage in Jun 1915, offering the possibility that two brothers married two sisters:

Jun 1915  Blean (Kent)
Leonard J Wraight
Minnie R Shepherd

These baptisms make a strong case for Leonard and Elsie being siblings:

Leonard J Wraight   Dec 1893  Eastry (Kent)
Elsie Wraight  Dec 1891  Eastry

...and these look possible for the other two as they are in the same registration district in which one of the marriages took place:

Minnie Ruth Shepherd  Dec 1889 West Ham
John William Shepherd  Mar 1891  West Ham

Their having second names/initials make all this more likely, although nothing is proved.

At the moment I can see a 1 year-old Minnie living in West Ham and a 4 month John William, but not in the same household, so this all may be wishful thinking!

Looking through the 1891 and 1901 censuses I think the Shepherd names are just co-incidence; a pity.

These are the most likely entries for your John William, but you will need to buy the 1913 marriage certificate to confirm them:

1891  RG12/1341  East Ham
William Shepherd, 28, gas fitter, b Louth, Lincs
Mary A S, 22, wife, b Barking
George S, 2, son, b Barking
John William S, 4m, son,b New Beckton

1901  RG13/1606  East Ham
William Shephard, 39, coal porter, b Lincs
Mary A S, 30, wife, b E Ham
George S, 12, son, b Barking
John S, 10, b E Ham
William S, 3, son, b E Ham

I have just looked at your other posts and see that you now John William's father was called John William and was a coal porter, so the above entries are looking more likely.

Marriage
Mar 1888 West Ham
John William Shepherd
Mary Ann Monk

Thanks Richard

You are right. I actually have the marr cert for Elsie and JWS...I should have said that.

It tells me very little about the John William Shepherd history (listed in army with barracks address)

Although I have age and his fathers name (also John William Shepherd) there is not enough to trace him in census, and believe me I have tried (spent longer on this one than all the rest put together)

I thought if anyone recognises the William CW Shepherd then they might have/know of,  the family history.

I need to look into the other records you have unearthed, many thanks for this.

You are looking for a John William Shepherd, son of John William Shepherd (a coal porter), born c1900. Between them the two censuses and 1888 marriage entry I gave you show a John William Shepherd b 1891 (in West Ham where he married), son of John William Shepherd, coal porter. It must be a pretty good bet that they are the same person.

I came across this post when searching for WWI history information for a recent visit to the Somme. I am the great great grandson on JW Shepherd and Mary Ann Monk. From info I have they had 10 children for which I have various info.

Interested in perhaps sharing info?
