Rainey Deaths
« on: Tuesday 09 December 08 19:33 GMT (UK) »
First post and I need some help,my Gt,gt gt,grandfather was John Charters Rainey died 17/12/1888,50 years old although I suspect that is an error, died Taylorstown,Balyscullion. His wife Eliza Quinn died 01/03/1866 40 years old at Gillistown,Duneane. She was Catholic not sure about John,I would like to find out where they are buried,I have been in the Grange Ballyscullion graveyard no luck, any idea's would be most welcome.I believe that they had seven children and I have baptismal records for some of them all Catholic parish of Duneane a Rev D Magreevy mentioned on one record, living in the above mentioned area's is it possible to pinpoint the actual church that they would have used.I hope to visit the area again, not so easy living in Scotland. Thanks in advance. :) :) :)

sonoftherock, happy times this doesnt answer your question which can be be encouraged next.
Sorry no excuses allowed,  make it a priority, but prepare very carefully for this second visit, make it a well planned exciting visit, bringing family friends or let them bring you or  come just yourself. I would be very surprised if you didn’t get a lovely welcome if you have planned it in advance.  Don’t rush unless time has caught up with you.  I went onto Google typed in Duneane Catholic Parish and got headings or locations and a an early result got http://irelandgenealogyprojects.rootsweb.ancestry.com/Old/County/antrim/antrimrc.htm

When you search the Griffith's Valuation site for Rainey in Co. Antrim 83 records come up. By clicking on the link for each one you can see the details. For example, Robert Browne is the tenant and his landlord is a Charles Rainey (which is why it comes up in a search for Rainey).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

BallyaltikilliganG  No luck with your suggestions, found a daughter Sarah on family search I already had her Birth Certificate and the John Rainey Gillistown in Griffiths could be him not sure if I could prove it.I believe that John  Charters and Eliza had seven children born,John 1846,Thomas c1852,Samuel 1853,Daniel c1854,Elizabeth Jane 1856,Hugh 1859,Sarah 1866.The firm birth dates are from Duneane parish records.Thomas,Samuel & Daniel all came to Scotland and I have them through census, marriage and death certs.John,Hugh,Eliza Jane all are listed once in a Scotland census although it looks like they were in Scotland short term no marriage or deaths found.Hugh living in Gillistown in 1888 signed John Charters death cert.I have a death cert for a Hugh 1911 aged 69 in Gillistown however the age way out also have a death cert for a Sarah,Taylorstown 1904 aged 52 again age way out. There is a will extract on line for Sarah 1904 in favor of a brother Hugh Rainey could be a coincidence. No wonder I bang my head off walls.Hope somebody might recognize this family. :) :) :)

Hi Sonoftherock,

I'm also looking for a "Rainey" family of Gillistown. I'm trying to trace a Henry Rainey, father of John(B1859) and Robert(B1852).  At this stage of my research I'm unsure if Henry had more siblings. Last summer I visited some of the churches around that area. In the Duneane Presbyterian Churchyard I came across a headstone erected by a Charters Rainey in memory of his parents William and Susan. Don't know if any of this is relevant to your research but maybe worth checking out the church records.

Hi Borris,
I don't think that we related,I have visited Graveyards in the area Moneyglass,Ballyscullion and I have just been through my notes no sign of a Henry.Found a stone in Ballyscullion erected by James,Robert Rainey 29/4/1855 age 52 years,Mother Eliza 18/7/1880 age 76 years, sister Eliza 21/6/1880,sister Mary Ann 7/7/1902 age 69.I found various Charters nothing tied in no John Charters .I will keep my eyes open for a Henry hope to visit the area some time this year.
Regards.

Sonoftherock,
Thanks for checking out your notes anyway, I wasn't really expecting that we would be related. I keep coming up against that brick wall with this one! Henry seems to be a man of mystery! I'm beginning to believe that he may have had a double name e.g. Robert Henry. I'll keep my eyes peeled for your John Charters in my research also.
Thanks again.
Borris

Have you checked History from Headstones website..they seem to have a couple of Rainey graves recorded which were linked to Taylorstown townland. Index search free then pay to view details.
