Athaliah Taylor married Joshua Cooper, Matty Coopers son. They had two children that i know of, William Cooper and Selina Cooper. Joshua died young and then Athaliah 'married' Sam Smith, son of Perron Smith (he being son of Elijah Smith and Sophia Chilcott, who used to travel around with Mattys parents) and Elizabeth Smith (dau of Lol White and Lavinia Smith) She wasnt the widow of Joshua Taylor, but Joshua Cooper, but because she reverted to her maiden name which we all know are interchangable anyway with our gypsy ancestors, this is where you are all getting confused. There are some bits about Sam Smith and Athaliah being the widow of Joshua Cooper in Charles Godfrey Lelands papers, if i can find the right pieces will post them.
The Sam Cooper and Annie Shepherd you are talking about are my grandfather Tom Coopers brother and sister in law. Their father was Samuel Cooper, son of Matty and therefore brother of Joshua Cooper.

in the 1881 where we have Reuben and Abigail (Horn) BIRD living in tents in Mitcham Suirrey we have reuben's son Henry b Worth on the next page ...as has been said before ...BUT travelling with them is a SAMUEL SMITH, 40 b Acton Middlesex hawker  and his wife Priscilla and kids...do you think this is your sam Smith = Athelia Cooper?

if she was Joshua COOPER's Daughter why marry as Selina TAYLOR?

In most travelling families the maternal line was more important than the paternal line. Despite being legally married a lot of children still went by their mothers name. My own grandmother Ocean Scarrott, was really a Brinkley as her father was Walter Brinkley, but she always took the name Scarrott, which was her mother counsey Scarrotts maiden name. But in 1901 census, they all go under the name Loveridge, which was her father Walter Brinkleys,  mothers maiden name(Esther Loveridge)! And on Athaliahs death certificate when it says widow of Joshua, I dont believe it means a Joshua Taylor, it was just assumed because she was using her maiden name. Remember on death certificates it is only as accurate as whoever reports it at the time-if Selina was present at death and she was Joshuas daughter she would probably say widow of Joshua rather than Sam Smith   Betty x
