Sometimes they would go to the nearest parish, regardless of where they lived. They could easily have a 'convenience' address for the purpose of Banns or Ann(e) could have been living in St Martin's parish.

some of my ancestors lived at Orseddwen which is just on the Welsh/Shropshire border about 2 miles west of Selattyn. Althouh it was in the Llangollen parish, most of the children were baptised there and they were buried there.

Thanks again.  It can sure get complicated.  So there is a chance that the family children were born Whittington and married Saint Martins.  The searching pre 1837 is a bit new to me.  I guess I'll check the siblings.  If the other children I found were married Saint Martin, there's a good chance I'm on the right trail.

Hi,

May I join please?

I have Turners born in Trench Shropshire on one side of my family (indirect)
Sisters Esther(1863-1913) Annie (1868) and Sarah Jane (1860) all born Wellington area, all died in Manchester
(parents William (1826) and Mary (1828)
Siblings: John, Mary, Charlotte, Leticia and George.

and
Thomas Smith (argh!) (Gt-grandad)
born Dec 1874 in Wombridge, Wellington, died Manchester 1931
Parents George (B Walsall 1841) and Elizabeth (b Wellington 1836)
G-parents - George & Sophia

I actually find it wierd that both my dads maternal and paternal family came from the same area, similar generations and settled in Manchester in the same area...........

I also have a personal attachment to Shropshire - I lived & worked out on the Welsh Marches, right on the border of Shropshire, Herefordshire & Wales in aminly in Hopton Heath (near Craven Arms) for about 3 years.
LOL I had a Shropshire postcode, Welsh Telephone number, Welsh Dr and a Herefordshire Library card - and was denied a vote in the Welsh referendum cos I lived on the wrong side of the 'Wales' sign!

Hi Gadget and others,

I'm another  ' Shropshire Lass ' so I'd like to join.

I was born & raised in Oswestry, a long time ago now.

Most of my ancestors came from there and the surrounding villages.

Does anyone know how I can order a copy of a Parish Record to see more info?

Hi Barbara - It was a long time ago for a lot of us  :)

Hi Wendy

A while back the Shropshire FHS produce booklets and fiche of transcriptions of the records of most of the parishes you are interested in. Only the fiche are now available, as far as I know. Some libraries (I think Melbourne is one) have the booklets.  I have a set of fiche for 'my' parishes which I then scanned and have got reasonable images of them.

I believe that these were purchased or whatever by others and they are available on CD from various suppliers and are part of the A*try parish records collection.

The only way that I know that you can see copies of the originals is either at the Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury or by ordering in the appropriate parish film via a FH Centre (LDS).

Thanks Gadget.  I believe there may be a FH Centre here in town.  I did order a CD produced by Ancestry but it didn't include a lot of detail.

Thanks again...

Hi,

I have a friend visiting Shropshire in a couple of weeks who's family lives very near Gobowen/Daywell.  He said he'd look up Parish records for me (see below for copy of the Parish record from Ancestry.  Does anyone know the location of this record?

Shropshire: Whittington, Halston - Parish Registers, St. Asaph Diocese
 Baptisms 1785.
  Baptisms 1785.
   Volume 8.
County: Shropshire
Country: England
23 Aug 1805 01 Sep 1805 George, s. of Edward & Ann Griffiths, of Daywell.

I'm hoping this record could give me Ann Griffiths maiden name.

Many thanks as always

Wendy
