1908 birth Croydon

Searched for 1908 birth Dorothy May KEABLE without result.
Father - William James KEABLE
Mother - Ethel Maria KEABLE (nee Reid)

Found 1908 birth Dorothy May Reid in Lambeth and wonder whether ordering a certificate is the only way to confirm mother's name. Her date of birth was 23.04.1908 and her parents lived in Croydon.

Dorothy was raised by William and Ethel KEABLE, and the family migrated to Australia in 1911-1912 but her birth has me stumped.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Hi Carley,

 Looks like Dorothy was born before they were married..... Until I found the marriage of William James and Ethel Maria in 1898.  Could Dorothy have been the child of one of Ethel's siblings and William and Ethel brought her up??? I think the clue will be in the birth cert.

Did Dorothy get married?? Who was named as father on that?? Was she married as Reid or Keable??

How sure are you that she was born 1908 and in Croyden here are some alternatives

Dorothy May Keable b. Sep qtr 1904  Wandsworth  district, Surrey
Dorothy May Kebble b. Sep qtr 1906  Lambeth district,  Surrey
Dorothy May Keeble b. Dec qtr 1907  Camberwell district, Surrey

So I don't really know what the answer is but go with the facts you have and your gut feeling. There are also  a couple more options but these I feel are more likely. Family tales can be misleading.. .My own mother was convinced her mother was born 1904 but turns out she was actually born 1903. Only a year I know but when you are getting certs it can prove costly if you don't have the correct facts.

If Dorothy is the legit child of Wm and Ethel then she would have been registered as Keable not Reid.

Hello Angie and thank you so much for your opinion.  I really appreciate it so much.

This lady Dorothy, always raised as Keable, and married as Keable used to say she was not born, she was quarried!! She was my mother-in-law and she never had a birth certificate, so maybe she was quarried!!

She did marry and she listed William and Ethel Keable as her parents.  When Ethel died in Australia, Dorothy is not listed on the death certificate as her child, but that could be an oversight too.

There was another child born in 1896 known as William Keable, and his birth was prior to William James and Ethel Maria's marriage.  When William Jnr enlisted in Australia for WW1 he stated he was born Lambeth, 1896 in the first quarter.  I could only find a William Reid born in Lambeth in 1896 so I presume illegitimacy, or born to a sibling of Ethel.  It was she and not William Keable Snr who gave him permission to enlist as well.

I will take your advice and go with my gut feeling, but it was great to get another slant on things.  No other member of my husband's family are really interested, well, they are always interested after the fact!!

Have been unable to find a birth record of Dorothy KEABLE on April23, 1908
Father.......William KEABLE
Mother...... Ethel KEABLE (nee REID)

Census record shows parents living Croydon a few years prior to the birth, and if anyone can help, I would be very appreciative. There must be an explanation as to why I cannot find her, surely.Thank you.

At that date the mother's maiden name isn't shown on the index.  Could this be the entry?

Apparently Hartismere registration district is Suffolk, not Surrey

Thank you MaryA.  I do not think it is her but I will check it out.  All the Birth Certificates I have bought have proved negative - but nothing saying she was not illegitimate, or just raised by the people she knew as parents.  She has really beome my brick wall, and there must be an explanation - but I'm running out of options to find one. She never ever owned a birth certificate all her life and I sure know why now!

Hi everyone,
 After the help and suggestions that I received from so many people, I thought I would advise, that after so long, and upon the release of the 1911 Census, I have the answer to my dilemma.  My lady of mystery, Dorothy May..born 1908 in Croydon was an adopted child and was born Dorothy May MARTIN and not KEABLE. We had long suspected it, and a birth certificate has been sent for. Thanks again from Carley in "Oz"
