Marriage look-up Lechlade Basson - Gearing
« on: Saturday 06 December 08 11:46 GMT (UK) »
I've got the GRO ref for the marriage of John Basson & Jane Gearing(1839/Sep/Faringdon/6/259) and wondered whether anyone could check probably the Lechlade register to see who the parents were etc.  (John & Jane were both of Lechlade so it's the most likely place).

I've already checked all the Oxfordshire registers, thanks in ancticipation.

I have his pob 1818 Lechlade from the census, where did you get the father Henry from, was it from the parish register?   I have a copy of Glos FHS CD for Baptisms 1813 to 1837 but it's not shown in my copy.

Thanks

Hi Janet,

Thanks for the reply, I've just tried looking it up on the IGI but nothing comes up, strange, what surname variant are you using and is it an entry entered by an LDS member?

Thanks
Carol

Janet,

Thanks, I'd just found it when your reply came through.  As I thought it is one of those entered by an LDS member and that is why I'm trying to find the correct marriage entry.

I learnt to my cost in the early days of reseach that LDS member entries leave a lot to be desired, for instance a whole Baston family had been put with all their baptisms in Bampton Oxfordshire, I eventually found all baptims and marriages at Highworth in Wiltshire.  I have found quite a lot of LDS member entries for the names I'm researchingare more like guestimates. :(

I believe I know where his baptism is and although born in Lechlade he wasn't baptised there, but in his grandfather's parish in Oxfordshire.  I want the marriage look-up to see whether the marriage register confirms that this John's father was indeed Henry.

Hi Chaz,

Fairy story is not the word.  I've had a look at the Pedigree file submitted by the LDS member and it's pure fantasy.  The submiiter has allocated all the records to a single surname of Bason despite all the original register entries being in Baston, Bassen, Bastion, Burson, Barson, Basson, Besson, Bassen etc.

This is why I'm now checking all the original registers to correct all the inaccurate information put on the IGI by this member from the USA and another from Australia.  I've spent a considerable amount of money buying Cd's and transcript, (I have almost the complete set of Oxfordshire CD's and a sizeable amount from surrounding counties) to try to sort out the mess created by these two.

They've both built fictional families using names plucked from everywhere to fit in with their family bibles,  in at least half a dozen cases they claim lineage from people whom I now know from parish records, Wills, deeds and other document had died in infancy!

The hunt continues. ??? :)
