ROBINSON, James & Annie Shipping Lookup please
« on: Thursday 04 December 08 22:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I was hoping someone could please help me find out what ship James Robinson and his wife, Annie Elizabeth Blanchard Robinson came out to Australia on.

According to their daughters birth certificate, they were married in England in 1881 and their daughter was born in August 1883 in Australia, so there is a very short period where they could have travelled.

I have searched as many sites as I can find on the internet and the closest I could come up with was on the australian mariners site where a Mr & Mrs Robinson came out in February 1883 on the steamer, SIAM, but there are no other details to say its them.  Is there somewhere I could look that would show a passenger list when they left England?

James was aged approx. 39 when his daughter was born, Annie was either 30,  23, or 22 when she gave birth (three separate years of birth for same person on documentation)

Annie was born at Ilminster, Somerset, UK.  Unsure about James.  They moved to a property called Turanville at Scone in the Hunter Valley, NSW upon arrival.

Thank you,

Kelly  :)

Hello  there Kelly

Now  sometimes  people  told lies about  their marriage and age.

So  with  James Robinson do you  have where he was born so  that we can check the 1881 census and see if he was still in  England then.  Also  Annie what was her maiden name it does all help  with research

kind thoughts Jenn

The lists leaving the UK start in 1890, unfortunately. There often isn't a lot of information on shipping lists if the people paid for their own passage.

 - linking other relevant thread.

From freebmd, it appears she was registered at birth as Anne Blanchard Elizabeth Larcombe.
It also appears she was not married when the census was taken in 1881.
She is listed as 'adopted' by the Gould family so could have also used that name at marriage.
There is no obvious marriage for her and James on freebmd.
Perhaps they ran off to Australia together without marrying!

Wow!, super fast replies - thank you all so much.

Annie EB Robinson did die in Scone in 1884, and yes that is her registration number.  She is buried at Scone Church of England cemetery.

Annie was born Annie Elizabeth Blanchard Larcombe, in Ilminster, Somerset, but I am still having trouble establishing her exact age.  Her daughter, Eva's birth certificate said she was thirty when she gave birth putting her birth year at 1853, her 1861, 1871 & 1881 census records state she was born in 1860 and a bdm search shows she was born in 1859.

On their daughter, Eva's birth certificate she listed the name Larcombe as her maiden name, so I'm not sure if she would of used Gould on her marriage certificate.  The 1871 census shows her still as Larcombe as well.  Maybe she did run away with James to Australia?  It appears her parents were reasonably comfortable - her father was a School Master which I imagine was a reasonable position in the community in 1800's.  Maybe she was a bit of a rebel!

James is listed as being 39 when their daughter was born, putting his birth year at 1844, but with Annies multiple ages, who knows if this is correct.  James is listed as a Gardener on Eva's birth certificate.

I havent followed James' line much so far, mainly because Larcombe has been a much easier name to trace than Robinson (how on earth to the Smiths and Jones ever find anything - with great difficulty I imagine)

Thanks for adding the other thread - there is a lot of information about them there.  I'm still figuring out what information I need to add to help get the answers I need.

Perhaps finding their ship is something that just will not be possible.   I appreciate your efforts and thank you for looking for me.

Regards
Kelly :D

Possibly, given James' age, he was already married, so they couldn't marry and just ran off!
Remember that the censuses were generally taken early-ish in the year, maybe April or so, and it is age on the night of the census.

So her '21' on the 1881 census, could mean she was born late 1859 (and she's registered in September quarter 1859).

Did James remarry? What happened to Eva?

Thanks again everyone! :)

I think I will believe the birth register and take Annie as being born in September 1859.

I cant find much info on James at all.  All I have is his possible birth year of 1844, that he was 39 when Eva was born and he was married in London, but I am not sure any of that is entirely correct.  There are thousands of James Robinson on any lists that I look at.  I am not even sure when he died.

Eva died in 1967, but she revealed very little about her past to my family.  We always thought she may have been Indigenous Australian.  When my grandmother was challenged many years ago about this, she refused to talk about it.  When I started researching her a couple of months ago, we found out her parents came from England.  The only photo we have of her is attached.

Eva married William Ling in Bowral, so maybe her father remarried and moved down there.  Maybe I will have to go forwards to go backwards.

Eva's youngest daughter is still alive, although very old and frail.  I may have to make a trip up to see her see if she is able to supply any information about her grandfather or grandmother.
