looking for parents of Isabella

My 3rd great grandmother is Isabella McArthur I have found her marriage cert from SP and she married Dec 1836 to John Begly in Neilston Renfrew the parish was stated as Kirktonfield. I have  her parents listed as Alexander McArthur and Isabella McDonald ?? I haven't been able to confirm this, I have no other info on Isabella ie, place of birth, date of birth or siblings..any help would be appricated, help fill in the blanks on Isabella.. thanks Karen

The 1841 census index for Neilston can be viewed online at

However there is no Alexander or Isabel (Isabella) McArthur of the right age group listed. (The 2 Isabella's listed are aged 10 & 15)

It is possible that
1. The  family moved away from Neilston or
2. That Alexander & Isabella died pre 1841 and their daughters marriage.
3. That your Isabella was not from the area but working in one of the many mills or bleach related industries in Neilston prior to her marriage.

(Special block houses were built for women workers in the village)

Thanks Falkryn, that's useful to know - I've a feeling you mentioned it recently? and I've promptly forgotten! 


Can't see her on 1861.
Can't see husband John either.
Suggests they died or moved out of Scotland prior to then.
Had look for birth on SP in Inverness.  Is* McArthur  (soundex)
Closest match: Isabella McArthur b1803 to John McArthur / Isabella Campble

Extended to entire Scotland 1809 - 1815 : 19 matches
If fathers name input as Alexander : 3 matches, none if you add Isabella as 2nd parent.
None with mother as Isabella, no father.

I've viewed the 19 (getting monies worth for the credit) but none are obviously your gal.

What is your source for parents Alexander and Isabella?

One of the births is in 1812 but parents Archibald and Isobel McDougall AND it is in Glasgow.

No trace of death for John on SP either.

thank you for your help.. you've been most helpful. I have John born abt 1810 Donegal Ireland and Isabella I fiqure the same year and Scotland. they were married Dec 8 1816 Neilston Renfrew,I have a copy of a poor house relief application that my cousin got it also states that her father and Uncle Agnus McArthur were crofters?? just not sure if correct?? it's dated  Kilmonivaig, May 1867 if this means anything.I have search SP on births for Isabella and have found 2 Alexander McArthur but both had 2 different wives, both Isabella's but 1 was a McDonald and the other a Chisholm?? I know if I could find a sibling I would find the right parentage for her?? Sorry for blabbling on.. basically I'm talking to myself as I'm typing..lol.. and jumping between files  to give what I have to help in search???

Below is an obit I found on the web, actually stumbled into it.. the spelling of the name is different, I wrote the Glasgow hospital and it confirmed that John was there. This is were I got some of the information , parentage and such, but so far I haven't been able to confirm anything..paper work on the Begley's is well hidden.. thanks for your help Karen

The 'obit' you have found is actually details from a death cert. Lucky enough, it's 1855 and there's a lot more information than usual!

The IGI has an extracted record of the marriage of John Begley to Isabella McArthur on the 8th of Dec 1836 at Neilston. Have you checked the record on ScotlandsPeople (http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk) just in case there's any clues to be had there? No children show on SP or the IGI but it will depend on what religion they were. Only Church of Scotland parish records have been digitised just now.

I've found Isabella's death. She died Jan. 18th 1969 at Barnhill Poor House, Springburn aged about 60 years. Her parents are given as Alexander McCarter, farmer and Isabella McCarter m.s. McDonald. Neither are noted deceased, so you may be able to find death certs. for them. Isabella's death was registered by the governer of the poorhouse, John MacKay.

Possible death for Isabella's mum -- Isabella McArthur m.s. McDonald died 1864 at Lochaber, Inverness aged 79.

And to round off, a submitted entry that may be the same people. However, I would be a bit hesitant ... Nan/Nany are usually variants of Agnes, not Isabella.
