Laptops
« on: Thursday 04 December 08 10:28 GMT (UK) »
I have a Fuijitsu Seimens laptop. AMILO Li 2727. Intel Celeron Dual Core T1400 processor. 120 GB hard drive 1GB of RAM. Windows Vista
I cannot get it to load the 1881 Census CDs or the Vital records. I get this message:-
Run time error 339 Component RFVOL~1.0CX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered a fil is missing or invalid.
I have loaded these CDs onto every computer I have owned since the CDs came out, without any trouble.
Can anyone help

Hi

Welcome to RC  :)

Is this the first time that you've run them with Vista?

How old are the program files?
I have found in certain cases, an update needs to be applied for Vista to run.

Yes it is the first time I've had a computer with Vista. Previously I had Windows 98 SE and now I have XP. Both sets of CDs loaded with no problems. I think I have had them sice the late 1990's

It will probably be that tha's causing the problems then. I'm sure there's another posting about it and a possible solution on here somewhere. I'll do a search and get back to you.

Thanks that would be great if you can find something. I actually only bought the laptop to use at Family History beginners workshops which we run from time to time. I 've not so far heard a good word about Vista, most people want to stick with XP.

Hi again  :)

I can't see anything particularly related to census CDs but there are lots of queries about the BIVRI disks and Vista.

Hhere's one that might explain:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,288893.0.html

In particular:

When I installed the BVRI disks on my Vista machine I had to

Install original viewer
Run as administrator
Install updated version of viewer from BVRI Disks
Run as Administrator
Reboot and it then worked with no problem.

An alternative is to try running in compatibility mode
Right click on icon
select compatibility and select windows XP

So it looks as if you might either have to get the updated viewer from your supplier and try the first option or try the second way using caompatibility mode.

Hope this solves your problem.

Regards

The latest viewer is 4.0 which comes with the BVRI disks. There is a full guide to the installation of the Resource file viewer in the front of the folder holding the disks. The 4.0 viewer runs both the BVRI and the 1881 Census. There is also an installation guide with the 1881 disks.
It is recommended that you close all programs and disable any virus scan program before you begin installation
