christina campbell's immigration
« on: Tuesday 02 December 08 10:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if someone could help me find which ship Christina Campbell immigrated from Scotland to Australia on.

I know she was born about 1832. in 1841 Census she was with her family in Latheron, Caithness. Scotland. with members-
Eliza      7
Helen     11
Jamesina   2
Jane          5
Janet         40
John          55
Margaret    15

I know that she arrived in Qld between 1841 and her marriage to James Ballard 1847 in Maryborough. She was only about 16 when she married in 1847.

I cant seem to find any matching ship records or any information that her family came to australia with her.

Thanks,
Lauren

Hi lauren

That is very early for Queensland records & before separation, so there may be some information in NSW. You could try contacting the Queensland archives, to ask if they have any shipping records for this time (there are no indexes this early online)
http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/contacts.asp

and also the maryborough family history group
http://www.satcom.net.au/mdfhs/

The Qld State library  also has a pre-separation index with various information about people in Queensland before 1859. I think this is on michrofiche, but the library could advise.

If you don't have a copy of the marriage entry (church record) it is mentioned in the NSW indexes and you should be able to find it on film at state libraries and other centres where NSW pre 1856 BDMs are available. Alternatively, for a charge of around $10 you can get a transcript from a NSW transcription agent.

hello Trish,

I have looked at all the indexes online for NSW area and QLD area ...my other early realtives where both in the NSW indexes but there is no specific Christina Campbell for the right age and time.....unless she is on of the many Mr. Mrs. or Ms. Campbell's aboard ships. I was hoping that this wasnt the case and i could have a specific record.....perhaps this is not to be.

I have their marriage entry for Christina Campbell and James Ballard in 1847 but sadly no real info of interest.

Anyways thanks Trish.

Lauren

The early church records don't contain a wealth of knowledge, but it is nice that sometimes they do exist  :) . If you haven't queried the Qld archives, do send an email. They usually respond to queries quite quickly. If they have any information, there is a fee for copying/printing same, but I don't think they charge to check.

Hello Jenn,

I have just had a look and i can see a census that would fit for her dad and two siblings in 1861 and one in 1851 which may be possible ( some ages fit and some don't but there is anything else that is even close). So it seems her dad didnt go with her.....though not sure if her mum died or went to Australia with her....hmmmm????

James Ballard was from England....i have his ship records already.

Thanks for helping,
Lauren

I see that she and James Ballard had a very large family.

Can you  tell us  what  her  mother Jane's maiden name was , we can check to see if any other of the children ended up in Australia.

hello Jenn,

Yes they certainly did their part for the growing population in Qld. Most survived too which was good effort!

Um not sure of her maiden name....dont have a marriage for john and jane.

the 1841 census that i think it correct has
christina  9
eliza    7
helen     11
Jamesina    2
Jane     5
Margaret 15
Janet    40
John      55

not entirely sure if it is them but seems to fit ....but thats all i really know about them

Thanking you,
Lauren

Didn't the mariage certificate fr Christina Campbell an JAmes Ballard give her place of birth and parents names?
