Completed, Thanks Looking up an address in 1915
« on: Monday 01 December 08 23:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

Is there any way I can look up an address, 53 College Road, Bromley, Kent (as taken from a Passenger List) from 1915?

I don't really know where to look regarding Bromley, as I am confused whether it a London Borough, or whether it is part of Kent etc etc  ???

Try the Bromley Library   ...........................

             http://www.bromley.gov.uk/libraries/librariesintheborough/

or Bromley Council Offices.......

www.bromley.gov.uk

Bromley Civic Centre
Stockwell Close, Bromley, BR1 3UH, United Kingdom
+44 20 84643333

One of them may have Electoral Rolls & be able to help you.  Mention the Passengers names & it may match up.

Hi Daisy Loo

Bromley Local Studies (situate in Bromley Library as Wendy mentioned above) have local street directories and electoral registers.  They will do 15 minutes research for free which should be long enough for a quick look in either of the sources mentioned above.  There is a contact email address on the following page:  http://www.bromley.gov.uk/libraries/librariesintheborough/local_studies_library.htm

Thank you for all the links, I have already dashed off a couple of emails in my quest!  ;D

I am curious though, can anyone tell me, is Bromley part of Kent, is it a London Borough?  I found somewhere last night, that it got Borough status in 1903.  (I am assuming this meant it was a Borough of London), yet this address I am searching, is Bromley Kent.

In another place, it said that any mention of Bromley before the 1920's, was almost certainly referring to Bromley-by-Bow?  But this doesn't make sense to me.

My father, and his father grew up in Bromley, and yet this relative living in 53 College Road was unknown to them!

Thanks again :)

Bromley is a confusing place to live! Postal address is Bromley, Kent but it is a London Borough.  I never know whether to say i live in London or Kent.

::)

All I can say is there is a distinct difference between Bromley by Bow in East London (previously known as Middlesex) and the Bromley in Kent which is now part of greater London.

got it...so pre-1965,(not 1920) any reference to bromley, London, was Bromey by bow, as the other bromley is Kent....so if a census had Bromley Middlesex, or Bromley London, it was referring to B-by Bow, and the other Bromley would have been under Kent?

Sorry to be dense :( just want to make this clear, as I have relatives from all around this area, and want to make it easier where I search :)

Yes, as far as the currently available census is concerned, Bromley in Kent is always Bromley in Kent.  The other one is in Middlesex and then later in London.
