My grandfather was Mark Bate's elder brother (he was one year older) and was called William Samuel Thomas Bate. There was also a younger brother (Tom) who was lost overboard on his father's vessel aged about 5.

The other Mark Bate in this correspondence was the son of Mark Bate and also lived in Padstow and was married to Mildred Prior of Padstow. They had no children.

There were 2 daughters from Mark Bate senior, Evelyn (mentioned above) and Nellie. Evelyn was unmarried and Nellie had one daughter (called Jenny) that we know of. When Evelyn died we inherited some of Mark Bate's sea chests.

It was mentioned above that he served on a ship called Rhodesia, it might be of interest to note that he named his house Rhodesia when he returned.

Mark Bate senior was the son of William Bate who was born c1846 in Port Isaac who in turn was the son of Samuel Bate, also of Port Isaac.

We were originally looking for records of William Samuel Thomas Bate, who got a DSM serving in the Boer War with the Naval Brigade. Can anyone tell me where to look to get further details of this?

Thank you.

Try here Bushy
http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/DefenceFor/Veterans/Medals/DistinguishedServiceCross.htm or here http://www.stephen-stratford.co.uk/gallantry.htm

The latter may be able to help you further if you email him. I got these by typing DSM into Google and there are others.

Thank you Sottietoo

These sites tell me that the DSM only started being issued in 1914, and we had assumed that he received the medal in the Boer War (1900), so I will look further afield now.

I can't reply to your PM yet as I have just joined this forum, but we live in Yorkshire these days.

No worries Bushy but I do have quite a bit on the Bates in my Parishes database if you want it. You can find me on the OPC pages as the OPC for St Merryn www.cornwall-opc.org/index.htm  :)
