There are certainly 2 Mark Bates.

Both are buried in Padstow. By burial one agrees with date of birth for the son William and Mary Louisa (Looks like he is Ellen's husband) the man entered in the bible Pinetree has seen

-  the second Mark BATE (presume Anna's husband - by death was born about 1852)

1861 we have one to fit this death age (age 8 b St Isaac son of Samuel and Mary Ann)

Kris  ;)

I see the Anna Bate you mean with her daughter Murial and sister Mary Pope.  These girls are the daughters of Henry Pope and Joanna Brenton married 06 Oct 1855 in Padstow.  In 1891 they give their  ages as Mary Pope25 and Anna Bate 27.  HOWEVER in 1881 they appear with their parents as Mary Pope and Anna Bate and Anna is 25 and Mary is 20.  Now Anna is born in 1856 so she is very creative with her age  ::) I eventually found a marriage for her in June Quarter of 1879 to Mark Bate in Cardiff.  I believe him to be Mark Bate born 1853 in St Endellion to Samuel Bate and Mary Ann French married in Mar Q of 1846. So that probably solves that little mystery and all because she lied about her age!!

Further to my last.  I have the port Isaac Mark dead in 1911 in the area but he is not to be found between 1861 and 1901! Anna and Muriel are missing too and I have no deaths for them.  I wonder where they were??

Yes,

I found the marriage too Susan and the 81. All fitted when I realised they were older than I had initially expected. (Both of them if he is 32 in 1891)

Anyway re the bible - This man certainly had two daughters so well may be descendants out there.  Evelyn had at least 1 child ;D

That might be him aged 32 in 91 Susan - He is married, though b Padstow - the other one wasn't married by then. (whichever one this is looks like he is lying)  ::)
Being seamen they keep vanishing and reappearing.

1901 can be explained I think

A Mark BATE aged 49 is listed aboard the "Rhodesia" arriving Sydney 29 Apr 1901. OriginI think is Padstow - Port of Departure Pt Elizabeth (South Africa)

Both Mark's, Ellen and Anna were all buried in Padstow (Burial for Anna in agreement with a 1856 birth)  ;)

Cheers Kris  :D

Yes I agree and have entered him as such in both cases.  Maybe his age was wrong because he was still a leading seaman and not higher vbg.  Should be possible to get their Naval records.

WOW - thank you all for you investigations into this one.

Its fascinating to find out more about the owner of the Bible.  Fingers crossed that someone from the family finds this thread  ;)
